Maybe it is just the businessman in me but I would pay him what he is worth; not what "we needed to keep him". If USC was offering that much, let him hit the road.

We believe he's the guy, so no.

Plus that would have been an awful blow to our perception.

Now we get to beat our chests proclaiming we're a better program than USC.

Then color me glad as hell that you weren't the decision maker.

And why is he not worth it to us? What percentage of our budget are we supposed to use on coach's salaries? Why can we raise $740 million in one year, but not spend 0.6% of that on the face of team?

How the news broke:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Barely 24 hours after another blowout loss with the Atlanta Falcons, Bobby Petrino was back in college football.

Well, of course. But really, who other than Arky and Jeff Long was going to be retarded enough to hire him away from Wisky? I don't think there was really a danger of this happening.

As a Falcons fan, in hindsight, THANK GOD.

With Thomas Dimitrioff at the helm, it won't be more than a couple of years before Arkansas State can say the same.

Only Aggies will over pay for a 8-4 coach.

Your next National Championship will be never.

No, it's that paying for Sumlin hurts our wallets less than y'all paying for Merlin. That's just the truth.

You seem awfully butthurt. I love the fans of programs that have to use others for trash talk. It's so precious.

No. Steinbrenner ruined MLB with money. College football is headed in the same direction.

I'll leave it at this- we're talking about a number equated to proven success and legit upside. I think yall paid much more for upside, which is not unheard of, but when you're talking about making someone a top-10 salaried head coach, it doesn't really seem sound.

But as yall have said, and you are right, is that he's worth what you are willing to pay for him. And you guys paid for him to stay. I get that.

But when you take the context out of it, he's being overpaid based on real proven value. As you said, market value is market value.

I'm just saying he's overrated. That is, market value > true value. But I reserve the right to be proven wrong if he proves himself worth that $5M. I just don't think he has.
