And how hard is it to give down, distance and field position? A few years back Bama is in a tight game. They are punting around midfield and it is blocked. It was third down before Eli gave us the spot on the field.

This. I think the 2014 WVU game was the last time I had to rely on listening to the game on radio and it was awful. I had to switch it over the the ESPN Radio broadcast just to have any clue what was going on. Eli is fine to listen to say on a gameday radio when you are in the stadium, but he is terrible at giving you a visual of what is going on. But hey, at least I know Bama is wearing their crimson helmets with their white jerseys and white pants.

Love Gene Deckerhoff @FSU.I haven't listened to Eli Gold in a while but hr reminds me of all the old school guys and I always enjoyed his call.

SEC had some legends in Larry Munson,John Ward and Jim Fyffe.

Cristil's voice still comes to me every time I hear the starting lineups. I can't help but to say it every time.

"Standing 6 Tall 185 out of Jackson, MS". He was always true and you never second guessed anything he said that was going on in front of him. Like the new guy and Matt, was able to follow the game well with him.

Loved Hawthorne, especially his baseball broadcast. Like the new guy, but the color guys have always been bad, especially jumping in to quickly.

Yellum and Sandrone are miserable to listen to, never can follow the down, yard to go, or worse the clock. Completely lost.

Jack Cristil at Miss. State was one of the last best ones. Jim Hawthorne at LSU was great, too.

Unfortunately, Ole Miss is stuck with David Yellum. He turrible.

Best around now IMO is Wes Durham who used to call GT games and calls UNC and the Falcons currently. Really wanted him at UGA after Munson retired even tho he was calling nerd games.

I have a lot of respect for Ward at Tennessee and Munson at Georgia...they were tremendous. But the best of all time was Jack Cristil. Anyone who disagrees with this only does so because they never heard Jack.

As he got older, his cynicism and crankiness made him even better. After losing to Alabama 31-0:

"And today's Sonic Drive of the Game is my drive back to Tupelo, and I hope it's an uneventful one."

Blair is a polished professional, but I miss Hawthorne's grouchy campy style

I like Eli Gold. He's been Alabama's play-by-play caller since I was a year old. I haven't known anyone else.

Gold is awesome. Have been listening to him since I was a kid. Wish I could listen to him and watch the game at the same time

ONLY sidewalk Bama fans 'like' Gold.

Rod had impossible shoes to fill and pulled it off admirably. Fyffe is the best there ever was or ever will be.

Eli Gold is great with keeping up with the play by play action and his knowledge but I just cant stand his yankee voice. it makes me want to punch faces. maybe thats why all your fans are so violent?

I like Eli just fine. He's a pro. He's enough of a homer but not obnoxious or whiney. He's never going to give you a bone-chilling big call, but he's also not going to embarrass you. Snake was obviously the greatest color man on God's green earth, RIP.

Nobody left matches the days of Cristil, Ward, Fyffe and Munson, though.

Hawthorne was awesome in his prime. He was definitely grumpy in his last years. Even with LSU being a power in baseball, I think that sport is what wore him out. Its truly a grind compared to football and basketball.
