It's easy to understand why play by play calling is becoming a lost art. The only time it is necessary to listen to a game is if you are driving. Most games are at least offered on a PPV channel or can be streamed on the internet. When I was young there wasn't such an option and the broadcasters were great. My dad would sometimes prefer to watch the game on television, but listen to the play by play on the radio. I'm also old enough to appreciate listening to games before the NCAA exclusive television broadcasting rights were removed and games were only broadcast by ABC.

Last Saturday I was on the road for part of the day and was listening to a SEC game on the radio. To put it simply, it sucked. The school announcers basically only stated the results of the previous plays. There was no attempt to help you visualize the formation or describe the action as it was occurring. At one point it was 3rd and 10 and after the commercial break the other team had the ball 40 yards down field the other direction with a 2nd down.

How are your announcers? I'm also curious as to if fans from the team I listened to admit their broadcasters suck.

As much as I love Ellis for what he means for our program, he frickin sucks as an announcer IMO. Just yells into the mic nonstop. Suggs is fine. I don't really listen to the radio that much tho, just because of Ellis.

Eli Gold:

"First and ten. Handoff to Harris... HES GOT A HOLE! ALLLLL the way to the 35 yard line!

Second and six"

I also listened to the UGA game, and that guy was mentioning missed penalties committed by Notre Dame every other play. He might have been right, but it got old fast, and I was pulling for Georgia.

Todd Ellis:

"Ace takes off!

To the 40! 45! 50! Fifty...five!"

I like Bramlett.

Gold is awesome. Have been listening to him since I was a kid. Wish I could listen to him and watch the game at the same time.

I can't stand Chuck Barrett, and they shove him down our throats in football and basketball

I must be in the minority but I generally like Eli Gold. Granted I don't listen and depend on him much because of this invention called TV.

Our broadcast is just a commercial and cheerleading and complaining about refs.

Gary sanders and gusty Yearout were AU radio when I was a kid.

Then
"First and 10 Auburn at their own 27. Sullivan under center, Beasley slot left, Schmaltz split right, Backs split. Here's the snap. Sullivan drops back and lofts a long pass to Beasley. Complete against tight coverage at the 50 and taken down at the Tennessse 45."

Now.
"That was not a hold. Bryan sausage is good. Touchdown Auburn!!!"

I miss the Doug Layton/John Forney days. But Jack Cristal was the gold standard.

And we have a winner! Yeah, your broadcasters were terrible. I guess it could have been worse, they could have just referred to both sides as "Tigers" and left it a complete mystery as to who did what.

I always like Eli Gold. I also liked Jim Hawthorne from LSU. Of course Jack Cristal is the all time greatest in my book, but I've been impressed with our new guy Neil Price in his first two games. Hope he sticks around for 40 years.

I'm alright with Scott Howard, but when you had Larry Munson everything's kinda like eating canned tuna after that.

You can get yourself to like it, but the raw enjoyment will never be there.

They don't make Bob Fulton's anymore. I even liked Charlie Mack when he was our guy, but Todd sounds like he should be announcing a WWE match.

Todd would be a great color guy though once Suggs hangs it up.

What todd lacks in skill, he makes up for with enthusiasm.

Pretty much. Larry Munson was goddamn treasure the likes of which the South will never know again. He was a homer when it was needed and an eternal pessimist even against the sisters of the poor.

Scott Howard is ok and I like Zeier enough as a color commentator but Larry made it all sound effortless, like he knew the right thing to say at the right time and in the right tone of voice. Every TD, every first down, it all had the right level of gravity to it for that time in the game. If the play was good but not game defining, you knew it by his tone of voice. If it was a game winning or game saving play, he had a way of letting you know without having to say it.

I actually like Howard and Dowdle as basketball announcers. But if there's one thing that I miss in our football broadcasts, it's making me feel like I'm about to listen/watch the game with an old friend. It was like finding comfort in knowing that I wasn't the only one that was nervous and that we were going to struggle through this big game together. That's what made Larry special. He was talking with you, not at you.

We haven't had a good one since Cawood died. Ralph Hacker was lifeless, and Tom Leach is obnoxious.

I will brag on our guy - David Kellum. He has been the play by play broadcaster for Ole Miss for many years and I really enjoy his enthusiasm and knowledge.
