Our best was 1976, the year Indiana went 32-0. They had no seeds back then, Alabama #6 UNC #5 Marqeutte #2 and Indiana #1 in the polls all played in Baton Rouge.

Bama crushed UNC by 15, I think Indiana and Marquette had byes, at that time there were only 48 teams in the tourney.

We played Indiana next, close game al the way, led by one point with 2 minutes left and had the ball behind by one with under 30 seconds left, lost 74-69 I think, had to foul twice at the end. No other team got within 9 ( Marquette ) but every other team lost by 15 plus including Michigan in the National title game. We was good.

Yea, probably our best team ever. And of course we run into one of the best teams ever in the damned Sweet 16.

Wow, nice article about the tournament and games. Never knew that Bill Werber played for Duke and was All-America. Ten years later in 1940, he would be a starter (3rd base I think) on the 1940 Cincinnati Reds World Series Champion and would be the last surviving member of that team as he lived to be 100 years old.

Actually a 23 team conference. There was a tie for 22nd. If it were around today, do you think we could add 1 more school and ask for a 4 team playoff for a conference champion in football?

And LSU was still a very average, middle-of-the-road team...some things never change.

I was at the game and actually Alabama had the lead and the ball with center Leon Douglas in front of a fast break for an apparent easy lay up. He hesitated for Kent Benson to get to him in an attempt to score and foul Benson out, but got his shot broken up...should have won that game. Coach Knight stated at his presser after the game that Alabama was easily the best team they'd seen all year.
Providence (Pitino coached with Billy Donovan draining 3s) robbed us in a Sweet Sixteen final later....Alabama has been very unfortunate at The Dance.
