Obviously, this was prior to the beginning of the NIT and NCAA tournaments, however, the top team of the year in that era was selected by consensus among sportswriters. In 1930, Alabama went 20-0 winning the Southern Conference (predecessor of the SEC and ACC) and being named the top team in the Premo-Porretta rankings. That same year, Pittsburgh (23-2) was selected in the Helms rankings. Since teams from different sections of the country rarely played one another and even played under significantly different rules in some cases, it is difficult to reach a consensus pick, but Alabama seems to have as good a claim as anyone to the title in 1930.

They converted it into half of a football national championship or 3 gymnastics championships.

I was like--hey no wake, but then I remembered the Deacs didn't join the Southern Conference till 1936. That would be such a cool conference.

I think that was Rupp's first season. Wow, a 22 team conference. Imagine if we had that now Wait....if conference expansion keeps going, we might eventually get there

The Helms Championships are legitimate championships on par with today's NCAA Championships.

Or not.

Why the SoCon didn't have an official champ in football until 33.
