We hear from Clemson fans all the time, and have for decades (since Frank Howard), about a deep-seeded connection between Bama and Clemson and how they are kindred spirits and karmically connected.

Of course Clemson fans also like to claim a bond with Auburn about how the two campuses are so alike (their words, not mine), and how the students and atmosphere are so similar that there is a sisterhood type feeling with Auburn - a mutual love and respect if you will.

And then there is the LSU thing ... Clemson fans claiming LSU stole the nickname of their stadium, stole the mascot, stole the tradition.

In my mind all of this has always indicated a serious identity problem, a very serious insecurity problem, for Clemson and her fans. But what puzzles me, at times, is the apparent love of Clemson by so many Bama and Auburn fans ... or do you? Particularly Bama fans in general. It would seem, to the casual observer it seems to be a diametrically opposed Bama vs Auburn issue in the state of Alabama - for both Bama and Auburn to covet what Clemson has, or claims to have, would it not?

Back to the question for Tide fans - do you feel a blood connection with Clemson because of Frank Howard, Danny Ford and now Dabo Swinney? Or it is just that you feel a fond familiarity with their campus because of its similarity to Auburn's?

Or could it be that Bama fans sympathize with them about their claim against LSU and the whole Tiger mascot, Death Valley thing? Bama fans were pulling against LSU in the Chick-fil-a bowl. (But then again, so were Arkansas and aTm fans it would appear.)

I'm confused. Seems like Bama fans, in general, wouldn't give a rat's arse about Clemson one way or the other.

No, not in the least, which makes the claim by Clemson fans even all the more insane.

Clemson fans honestly believe they are one of Bama's children - a literal offspring of The Bear. They like to call themselves, "The Bama of the ACC."

I think of Clemson and Alabama as polar opposites. Clemson is identical to Auburn.

I don't mind Clemson. I think as a program and school they're almost exactly like Auburn. I want to see Swinney do well, but I'm not going to be upset if he doesn't. The real team connection to Alabama is Texas A&M

Well in a conference that shitty, they probably are. They and VaTech are the only fan bases in the ACC that have an actual passion for college football.

Pretty much every fanbase in the SEC has rabid football fans with the exception of Vandy's.

But are you claiming Clemson to be the most historically significant football program in the ACC, with their one severely tainted MNC in '81, their history of NCAA violations and ... what about FSU? If we're talking strictly National Championships would FSU not be more "bamalike" than the taterheads?

Not really. There are some coaching connections, but that's about it.

Personally, I would like to see Dabo do well. He was at Bama when I was, and he's had to overcome a really tough life to get to where he is, so maybe I feel a little empathy for him. But I don't really feel a connection to Clemson.

I don't give a flying frick about Clemson. If they ceased to exist, I wouldn't notice.

Florida State has only 2 national championships. Let's not forget their whole history depends upon that 13 year period (1987-2000) where they were among the most dominant programs in college football. With the exception of those 13 years, FSU has been an average to mediocre program.

I don't give a shite about Clemson. I may have pulled for them against LSU, but I pull against most SEC teams in bowl games.

There's really not a 'Bama analogue in the ACC.

Until South Carolina can win the SEC, all I think it means is that Clemson is more SEC-like than USC.

Yeah, I understand. I feel the same way about Texas being more SEC-like than aTm for the same idiotic adolescent dumassed reason.
