Did Gurley want to be suspended?

I'm going to label this as somewhat of a conspiracy theory up front. Before his suspension, the only realistic threat to knock Gurley out of the first round was an injury. Given his spot in the draft, the best possible scenario for him was to end the season where it was.

Given his situation, there are a few alternative scenarios.
- Finish the season and risk injury, potentially losing colossal amounts of money in the event of a devastating injury like Lattimore a few years back.
- Tell the coach you want to sit the rest of the games. Likely getting himself kicked off the team and at the very least hurting his draft stock due to attitude etc...
- Get docked with a minor NCAA infraction, miss games, and do negligible damage to his draft stock.

Now that his suspension is almost up, how has it affected him?:
- A significantly reduced risk of injury.
- He's probably out of the Heisman race, and would likely be in 2nd or 3rd now regardless.
- When he returns, he will probably get about half the carries he was seeing prior to suspension. This is a huge positive for him, reducing the risk of injury even more.
- His draft stock will be unchanged.
- He got several weeks of time in which his practices weren't restricted, essentially bonus time to get ready for the combine.

This suspension, statistically and monetarily, was the best thing that could have happened to Gurley. Every athlete in college football is continuously taught what they can and cannot do. They know they can't sign autographs for money. I'm not saying that he purposefully got suspended, but it wouldn't have been a bad move if he did.

The Heisman would have been worth it.

I'm going to say there are a lot of athletes out there that are far more interested in the money of a first round NFL pick.

maybe so - but if you win the Heisman, that usually equates to a 1st round pick anyway.

I'm never going to believe a theory that involves a college player being so terrified of injury that he avoids playing.

Lattimore had TWO HORRID injuries, even if a player had someone in his ear telling him to lay low for the draft, no one is going to be trying to avoid "injury" with the mindset that it will be like lattimore. Lattimore is the absolute worst case, the lightning bolt on a sunny day of injuries. You just can't live your life trying to avoid stuff like that.

Lulz. He'd have 1200 yards after 6 games.

Alright, what would winning the first Heisman at Georgia in a long time be worth?

I think a lot . You could be a failure on the NFL level but you would forever be loved and adored and financially set in Athens.

It was a good retirement investment- which would be needed within three years given RB longevity in the NFL.

I would say no but it is a reasonable question. After repeated information sharing/warnings by our coaching staff regarding NCAA rules, ignorance of the rules or consequences of breaking them is likely not the case. I think most of our fans chalk it up to a young man rationalizing violation of the rules for short term gain. But Gurley is not stupid and was well aware of the risk he was taking and rolled the dice regardless.

In the end, assuming his NFL comes to fruition, he wins either way and definitely reduced his risk of injury through the 4 game suspension. Whether this was factored into his decision making, no one can say not knowing his related thought processes. What is certain is that some fans, including yours truly, have lost some respect for Gurley as a result of this matter, he blew his Heisman chances and potentially jeopardized a title chance for his team.
