He walked in to a very very good situation at Tennessee. I think he is a good coach but outside of the Elite 8 team his teams with his own players were nothing special and even that team got very lucky with its draw.

Yeah from what I saw tonight it seemed like nobody on Auburn actually wanted to score, they just kept passing until somebody turned it over. That's why the first half got so bad.

Yep. That first team was built for him. Versatile big men, great 3 point shooter plus another very good 3 point shooter in Smith and a solid, veteran point guard in Watson.

To answer the OP, he never could. He runs the same motion offense that any good high school coach can counter. He can't make adjustments. He is charismatic and can sometimes convert this into superior talent, which makes him appear to be a better coach than he really is.
