How did this happen? Did he turn into a coach of some type there?

Can pretty much call these the Jefferson years. 2011 was very special but ended up a disappointment.

Looking back on it, Shula did a much better job than it looks like. We really could've become the next Pittsburgh. He did a good job at not letting us get any worse. Don't get me wrong, he needed to go, and he needed to go when he got fired.

In retrospect, he played the part he needed to play. He did bring a measure of stability (believe it or not) that 'Bama was sorely in need of given all that had happened in the prior ten years.

But letting Tennessee and Auburn run streaks on us the way they did... it was a very frustrating time.

Hopefully he'll be remembered more fondly for keeping you guys competitive through a rough time.

1978 8-4. Lost to texas, which lost my guy Emory Bellard his job

No it didn't.

He resigned after six games following two blowout losses to Houston (33-0) and Baylor (24-6).

He did lose to Texas the year before (57-28) with two of the other losses being embarrassing blowouts vs Michigan (41-3) and USC (47-28) though.

That's the game being shown during the very beginning of The Last Boyscout.

And Detmer said we couldn't hang with them.

Year 1 Undergrad - Doug Barfield's final year, 3-8 record, 0-8 in the SEC, James Brooks was fun to watch.

Year 2 Undergrad - Pat Dye's first year, 5-6 record, fun fun fun team to watch because they were EXTREMELY physical and would beat on the other teams... other teams would out-talent us, but they wouldn't out-play us.

Year 3 Undergrad - 8-3 regular season, Bo Jackson's freshman year, Tangerine Bowl victory in Orlando vs. Boston College with Doug Flutie.

Year 4 Undergrad - 10-1 regular season, Sugar Bowl victory vs. Michigan.

Year 5 Undergrad - 8-4 regular season, including the legendary 42-41 win vs. FSU in Tallahassee, Liberty Bowl victory vs. Arkansas.

I watched the Auburn program progress from a Vandy-level in 1980 to one of the most powerful programs in the SEC in the rest of the decade of the 80's.

I attended Alabama from Fall 2007-Spring 2010 after going to a juco for the first two years.

But my entire 5 undergrad years had 3 10 plus win seasons, two SEC championship appearances, a SEC championship, a BCS Title, and a Heisman winner.

I hope so, and I think he's viewed more positively than negatively by the rational group of fans. He did the best he could. It's not like he slouched around. He just didn't have what it took to save the program

Yeah, and looking back, I think he was intended to be more of a steward than anything else. I don't think that, when the decision was made, that 'Bama decision makers expected him to be a world beater.

It wouldn't be unreasonable to view Shula as a 4 year interim coach

Transferred to UF as a junior.

2012 - Pretty crazy for the LSU and South Carolina games... Otherwise, though, was a little surprised. Not much enthusiasm compared to years that I attended games while not enrolled at UF.

2013 - TBD

First time poster, long time reader/lurker.

I did my undergrad at Ohio State and I must admit we were spoiled with success up until it all came crumbling down.

2007- Beat a good Washington team out west, beat Michigan, won the Big Ten, lost to Illinois and LSU in the title game. Finished 11-2 and in the top ten. Had some pretty crappy tickets freshman year. Michigan also lost to App State .

2008- Got crushed by USC because Tressel conservative play calling, beat a solid Wisconsin team in Madison (not easy to do), destroyed Michigan 42-7, won a share of the Big Ten with Penn State. Lost to Penn State on a fumble , USC and Texas in the Fiesta Bowl. If only our defense could have prevented Colt McCoy from completing that final drive. Finished 10-3.

2009- Best year ever outside of losing to a freshman lead USC team and Purdue. Won a clinch of the Big Ten on a relatively easy schedule and final kick against Iowa to rush the field. Clinched it by beating Michigan in Ann Arbor. Won the Rose Bowl against Oregon. Finished 11-2 and in the top 10.

2010-Well some say it was vacated but it still happened. I got pics. Beat up on Miami in the Horseshoe, and got out to undefeated start at 6-0. Ranked #1 after Bama lost to South Carolina only to follow it up and lose to Wisconsin, a game I just so happen to be at. Sucks but had fun in Madison. Went to Iowa City a few weeks later and had fun at a tailgate and the game. Season was on the line at 4th and 10 and Pryor converted on the 4th down to keep the drive going and seal the win. Beat the Hawks and rush their endzone. Best seats I've ever had in my life. Went to The Game the next week and destroyed Michigan in route for a share of the Big Ten title. Went on to beat an SEC school in the Sugar Bowl and finish 12-1. Yes, I know we suck against the SEC.

Then the Tressel situation happened and it was a living hell on campus. Tressel was fired, the season vacated and everything was in flames.

2011- Nightmare. Super Senior year we finished 6-7 and lost to Miami, Michigan State, choked against Nebraska, Purdue (a game I was at), Penn State , and lost to Michigan only to be followed up with a lost to UF in the Gator Bowl. About the only good thing this season had was the 2011 game vs. Russell Wilson Wisconsin Badger team (last game I was at) and the fact Meyer came back to coach football. I guess his heart is better.

I was spoiled in undergrad with several BCS bowl games, wins over our three main rivals, and Big Ten championships. My last year was humbling and served as a reminder of how it can all come crashing down. Never take anything for granted.
