None of the current Big 6 are going anywhere any time soon. Bama goes without saying. No discussion there. Historically, UT is still number two behind Bama in terms of all-time wins and bowl games. Georgia is just barely behind Tennessee in both categories. LSU is just barely behind Georgia in both categories. Auburn isn't that far behind LSU. Also, some dude named "Heisman" coached there for a while. Florida is the most recent, but they've had such a sustained streak of success (30 years and counting, minus a couple blips) that they've more than earned their place.

Right now, nobody threatens to usurp any of them.
I agree with this;

TAMU is, from the SEC's perspective, barely more worthy than Arkansas right now and for the foreseeable future.
Not this, though. Arky has considerably more credentials than A&M. Significant head-to-head matchup lead, historically a stronger program, have been to the SEC championship game, have made a BCS game. Both in football and overall sports, a better resume.

UF = 10 SEC Championship Game appearances, 7 wins.
UF = 2 BCS Championship Game appearances, 2 wins.

aTm = 0.

Big 6, ftw.

Congrats on dominating the SWC after we had already left and then getting one title in the Bevo 12.

Honest reply to the OP-
the Big 6 is exclusive, it is for the power players of the Southeastern Conference as a tradition. To be included, you have to be a serious contender for top 10 rankings (in general, year in and year out); you have to have won the conference title several times; and you almost certainly have to be identified as an "SEC team". The only way you break this last requirement is to come in and dominate the SEC outright for several years, and it would help to have been considered a national power before entering the league (think- Florida St in the ACC, Penn St in the Big 10).

Arkansas was fairly close to meeting that requirement, but wasn't quite there. A&M is a step below Arkansas; you accomplished nothing but finish in the top 6 of the conference, you didn't win it. Arkansas had the benefit of coming from the SWC and being a power there. A&M might have been on the same level as Arkansas in the SWC, but their Big 12 resume is a lot lower- A&M would have had to have been on the Oklahoma/Nebraska/Texas level. And, they haven't been.

Oh, and only Alabama has more championship hardware than UF among SEC teams.

Quite simply not all conference titles are created equally.

Winning the SEC once is more impressive than winning Conference USA 10 times.

So total # of conference championships is an almost useless metric. You can really only compare two teams that have been in the same conference over a long period.

Alabama's 4 Southern Conference titles count just as much as Texas A&M's 19 SWC/Big 12 Conference titles count - zero.

Alabama has 23 SEC titles
Texas A&M has 0
Florida has 8.

Florida is Big 6, Texas A&M is not.

And since we still have the trophy for 84, I say 9.

Wow, OP learned the hard way about the Big 6. It's the muscle of the SEC and is football oriented. If it was all-sports, then UK would definitely be in the mix because of its 46 first-place finishes in basketball. Next is LSU with 11, Alabama with 8, UT with 8, UF with 6 and MSU with 6.

I think A&M will quickly find their place at the top of the conference and will emulate Florida's ascendency of the past 25 years. All the pieces are there. A good AD will create a monster in College Station
