Two great coaches, both brutally honest men. I met Stallings in 1996 when he was visiting, with his son, a Gamecock practice. He was one of the most likable, personable, people I have ever met. Completely open and approachable. We actually talked for maybe ten minutes - he was just a very amiable person.

I don't know if you realize it (being facetious of course, I know you know this) but we've been through a lot of down periods. Winning a conference championship when you haven't won one in 10 years and don't win one for another 10 years is a really f'in big deal in some peoples book. The only time during his career here and an 18 year stretch that we beat Texas was 1967. It may not mean a lot to you, but going 18 years and only beating your rival once, that's going to elevate you somewhat.

Fran and Sherman both had more overall success which is sad.

Bah. Never even won a non-shared divisional championship with either of them.

I was talking about Stallings. I think Bear is safely in the great coach category.

Kinda figured that...Stallings had 1 good season at A&M when he won the '67Southwest conference title ( and then beat the Tide/Bryant in the 68 Cottonbowl). Even then A&M went into the bowl with a 6-4 record. After that season everything went south quickly. The only saving game worth remembering was the 1970 LSU game in baton rouge when Hugh McElroy caught a pass from Lex James and scored a 79yd TD with 13 secs on the clock and beat lsu 20-18. I was there and none of us could believe it. Stallings went on to lose most of his games as coach and was run off eventually ( I remember him being burnt in effigy at 1972 mid week rallys) going to the Dallas Cowboys as a DB coach followed by his Tide job. But he isn't to blame totally...hard to recruit to A&M back in those days and I guess we didn't write big enough checks.

Gene Stallings is my favorite coach of all time. I was old enough to remember the last decade of the Bryant years, but not old enough to appreciate how special they were. Gene Stallings is all class, and he'll probably always be my favorite Bama coach regardless of the fact he's probably no better than 4th on the list based on accomplishments.

Stallings definitely had the deck stacked against him at A&M. A&M was still All Male when he was hired and mostly Corps. No scholarship limits had A&M playing with half the players of their competition all too often. He wasn't loved though.

Now he is seen for the man that he became more than anything. He has the Junction/Bear connection and has always been a good Aggie. Certainly he was a lead voice in helping us to go to the SEC as well. Class man and his son was also an incredible person.

Kind of like Spurrier I guess, except in reverse. Spurrier said something this past Monday at his press conference about always being a Gator ... and will someday again be a Gator, but he and his family are all Gamecocks right now.

I guess Stallings was in a similar position between Bama and A&M except Stallings did not have to play A&M every year.

It'll be interesting to see what colors Stallings wears when Bama and A&M meet.

Stallings has already said he would be pulling for the Aggies. He's said it many times on the radio. Of course, he love Alabama, but he's an Aggie through and through.

That said, I doubt he wears any colors.

Stalling is old school A&M, he will wear maroon. He will be very classy and tasteful, but he will wear maroon.

I think Sherill and RC are both held in higher regard at A&M

and you'd be wrong. Neither of those were aTm trustees.

Sherril is pretty highly regarded at a&m. RC did some good things in his earlier years, time will probably make him look better overall.

I would expect Coach Stallings to wear maroon at the A&M/Bama game. That's his alma mater*.

*I would hope no Bama SECrantards make an issue out of it, either.

It's really ironic that two great schools share three great coaches. Bryant, Stallings and Sherrill.

Can you imagine the feelings of Gene and Jackie when A&M and Alabama play? They love both schools and both schools should honor them.

Is he thought of as a great coach or just a lucky one with some good seasons?
Stallings is remembered as a great coach at Bama for winning a NC and some good 10+ win seasons. Stallings is most remembered by Bama fans and world wide for IMO the most important of all is for the man he is and the world would be a better place if we had more Gene Stallings in it. The guy's a dying breed an, "old school" that they don't make anymore.

I have several footballs signed by Bama players but my most valued is my Gene Stallings signed ball that my wife got before we were married at a Bama game. The wifey had a cheerleading scholly at Bama but her grandfather has eight seats on the thirty section J and her grandfather gave big contributions to UA and even knew The Bear and he had even been over for supper one time all before the wifey was even born.

The stories you can hear from some old people....

Think about it. Who else has a movie, book and numerous articles written about them. When the final result was they sucked.
