Built by Bama. Alabama Letterman Years: 1928-30 Hometown: Barlow Bend, AL
Frank Howard in his Alabama uniform.
quote:
Easily the best storyteller of them all was Frank Howard. The former Clemson coach played for Alabama under Wallace Wade
"It was survival of the fittest," he recalled. "We started out with 250 freshmen football players and there were 14 left when we graduated. I think one time he tried to run me off "
And even though the Tide and Auburn didn't play each other in those days, Howard makes it clear the rivalry was very much alive and well.
"I wanted to be a poultry farmer. But Auburn hadn't done too well in football, and Alabama had been to the Rose Bowl two or three times, so I decided I wanted to go to Alabama, that I'd rather play in the Rose Bowl than be a chicken farmer."

Quite possibly the greatest quote in Alabama history

And then the next weekend in Nashville, my childhood hero, Watson Brown. How awesome for 7 yr old was that? First two college games in person, Ole Miss-Alabama and then Alabama vs Vanderbilt (as a Vandy fan.)

Howard, Ford, and Swinney have accounted for 48% of Clemson's total victories....too wiert!

Can't get much better than that. About like my dad's first college basketball game being LSU-Alabama in 1970 when Pistol went for 69 points but lost 106-104. It only goes downhill from there.

Their field is named after an Alabama player, Frank Howard Field.
Their famous logo, the tiger paw.... Alabama player Hootie Ingram was responsible.

in 1969, that rumblings began about changing the logo from the traditional tiger to something more original. A committee was formed to investigate a new logo and to direct the development of such a change. Members included Athletic Director Frank Howard, Assistant Athletic Director Bill McLellan, and Head Football Coach Hootie Ingram, who some suggest was the driving force behind the shift to the Paw.

howard only had like a 60% win percentage?
Is/was that normal for a 'great' team back then?

This wasn't THAT unusual for teams outside of the SEC and Big 10 in that era. Not an easy answer for it, but in Clemson's case, the ACC just wasn't real strong in football. From 1963 through 1968 the team that won the ACC didn't participate in a bowl. There were only 10 or so, but they were eligible.
Howard's chief rival, in terms of longevity in the ACC was Earle Edwards at NC State. In 17 seasons, Edwards was 77-88-88. A losing record. He did have some good teams, in fact his 1967 team was ranked as high as #3 in November until they lost to Clemson. Clemson was 6-0-0 in the ACC with an overall record of 6-4-0. No bowl invitation. NCSU did receive a Liberty Bid and beat Georgia.

I've always enjoyed this Frank Howard clip. He tells a story of driving across South Carolina to Charleston to visit a potential recruit he's heard great things about. (Remember this is pre high school scout film and recruiting services.) The kid opens the door and Howard doesn't like what he sees and then pretends to be a traveling salesman.

Did you leave out Charlie Pell because he left in disgrace and did't want to start a conversation about the large number of Alabama affiliated coaches have gotten other programs in NCAA trouble?
