It is funny how Alabama is the only team that can get better as the season progresses. For starters, Chad Kelly was making his first SEC start and got better as the season went on. Treadwell was still shaking off rust until mid season. We didn't have the #1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft at LT. Our line was a mess.

Where did I say Ole MIss didn't get better as the season progressed? I think in some ways they did, but they also lost a few games since the Bama win so I don't think they progressed as well as Bama.

Thanks for the stats and the analysis. I'm one of those geeks who eats up this kind of material.
However, I'd suggest that your conclusion is skewed, mainly because we are now in January 2016 instead of September 2015.
(1) Bateman started against Ole Miss because he was supposed to run the zone read. Every time Bateman could have gained 20+ yards on the keeper, he was too terrified to make the right call, so he let Henry get stuffed at the LOS.
How much of Bateman and the zone read can we expect to see in the NC game?
(2) With 2:30 left in the game and the Ole Miss run defense completely gassed, Kiffin decided to go for the home run against a soft cover 2. The Nkemdiche/Haynes stunt pressured Coker into throwing his second INT.
That may have been the last really bad decision Kiffin made all season. Since that game Coker has thrown long only when he has a favorable match-up downfield, i.e. after the safeties cheat up.
(3) With regard to poise and confidence, Coker is hardly the same QB we saw in the Ole Miss game.
(4) The Achilles' heel in Alabama's defense was the height and strength advantage the Ole Miss WRs had over Alabama's DBs.
Do Clemson's WRs pose a similar threat?
Clemson may give the Gumps a better game than us SEC homers expect, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

This has been the main difference to me between Ole Miss and Clemson. On the flip side, Clemson is a bit better running the ball than Ole Miss is.

Does anyone know how much better Clemson's front seven on defense is this year than last? They haven't looked very special this year and the only game I really paid attention to them last year was the Georgia game. Gurley averaged 13.2 yards per carry and Chubb averaged 17.5. I would imagine Clemson will have to sell out a little to stop Henry and Drake and Clemson's secondary isn't good enough to handle Ridley and Stewart one on one. Clemson will score but I doubt they'll score enough to beat Bama.

They've been up and down.
On the negative side, they gave up over 150 rushing 5 times. In the case of App State, the large rushing total was still much less that what the Mountaineers averaged in other games. Here are those games, what Clemson allowed, and what the team averaged in their other games.
App State 202 (277)
Boston College 160 (164)
FSU 197 (165). Dalvin Cook got 192 in this game.
Syracuse 242 (156)
South Carolina 181 (152)
On the positive side, they held Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and North Carolina each to roughly 100 yards under their season average and completely shut down everyone else.

What's interesting about the FSU game, is Cook had something like 125 yards on his first two carries. It was extremely deflating in the stadium, but the defense rallied and did what they needed to do through the remainder of the game.
Clemson's defense has been suspect to giving up big plays, a trademark of Venables' aggressive style. They blitz a lot and leave players in 1-on-1 situations, so if you have a mismatch or someone slips, you can get a big play against the Tigers.
I'm interested to see the linebackers and how they cover Bama's tight ends and backs in the flat with what I expect to be a huge effort to stop the run first.
