Clear Plastic Bag Policies : is every school changing to this in 2016?

I know that Alabama (and I think Auburn as well as some others) have changed their bag policy. Alabama actually sent all the season ticket holders 1 clear plastic bag (thanks, I guess) to use.
I anticipate some series tension at the gates when folks show up with bags that aren't allowed inside.
This is the new Alabama bag policy :
UA - Clear Bag Policy
I anticipate some series tension at the gates when folks show up with bags that aren't allowed inside.
This is the new Alabama bag policy :
quote:
In the interest of public safety and to significantly expedite entry into Bryant-Denny Stadium, The University of Alabama is implementing a clear bag policy that will limit the size and types of bags that may be brought in by fans. The University regularly reviews policies and strategies for fan safety. The implementation of this measure is intended to enhance public safety while minimizing time spent searching bags at gate security checkpoints, thus easing access into the stadium.
The University strongly encourages all fans not to bring unauthorized types of bags (bags, purses, backpacks, etc.) to Bryant-Denny Stadium. Beginning this fall, fans will be able to carry the following style and size of bag, package, or container into the stadium:
- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12" (Official Alabama Crimson Tide logo plastic tote bags will be available at SupeStore, Shop.RollTide.com, Academy Sports and Outdoors, Hibbett Sports and Wal-Mart by August 15, 2016). In addition to these licensed Alabama retailers, you can also check with your local Alabama retail stores for officially licensed Alabama clear bag products and go to RollTide.com/allclear for updates.
One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc bags or similar).
- Small “clutch" purses, no larger than 4 1/2" by 6 1/2", with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the stadium in addition to the approved clear plastic bags.
- ALL TIDE PRIDE MEMBERS WILL RECEIVE ONE CLEAR BAG FOR EVERY TWO TIDE PRIDE SEASON TICKETS PURCHASED IN THEIR AMENITY MAILING IN AUGUST.
- Fans will continue to be able to enjoy their tailgate activities on and around campus, and to do so with greater safety and the knowledge that their entry into the stadium will be smoother and faster.
Spectators also will be able to carry other items allowed into the stadium such as binoculars, cameras, and smart phones, but their cases will not be allowed.
- Working personnel, including accredited news media, will continue to enter the stadium through designated gates where they will be subject to screening and bag inspections of the same manner as in the past.
quote:
WHY DID THE UNIVERSITY ADOPT THIS POLICY?
This is about both safety and improving the overall fan experience. The University of Alabama frequently reviews its public safety and stadium security policies looking for ways to improve them. The most recent review concluded that there is a need to adjust our policy to enhance public safety and make stadium access more efficient by limiting the size and style of bags carried into the stadium. This proactive measure will enhance safety inside and outside the stadium, and speed the security screening process for all fans. The public deserves to be in a safe, secure environment.

I'm guessing there will be a lot of one time game attendees who don't know about the rule that will get pretty pissed once they figure out they have to walk back to the car and drop stuff off.
But, that is the way new policies like this generally work out the first year, then everyone figures out the policy and remembers.

Per Alabama's website, other schools implementing the same policy are :
- Auburn
- Florida
- Mississippi State
- Tennessee
- Texas A&M
- South Carolina
- LSU
These schools do not allow ANY bags (which seems a bit much)
- Michigan
- Ohio State
- Penn State
- Michigan State

Auburn has switched to this for this year, and season ticket holders got a complimentary bag with BBVA/Compass advertising on it (yay!).
Tennessee has made the switch this year as well..
I think this is just bringing the SEC into compliance with the NFL, and as we see more and more games being played in NFL venues at the beginning or end of the season, they figure they will make the college ranks the same.
It is a pain, especially if you have little kids, but at the same time I understand it. An SEC stadium with 85,000+ people in it would be an inviting target for terrorists, and it would be impossible to run everyone through a metal detector.
The security at Auburn is very hit or miss with how well they "inspect" inside a bag - sometimes they root through everything, other times it is just a glance in the top.

No frick this shite.
Growing up at my school after Columbine we didn't get to use lockers and had to switch to transparent bags.
I like eveyone got a cool looking mesh backpack, because clear plastic looks dorky as frick. Then it rained and everyone's shite got wet.

Agree PJ - I'm totally fine with it. As you said, it is one of the last semi-soft targets that could cause massive damage.
I do think some sort of bag should be allowed. For instance, my dad has diabetes and has to take insulin in. If you can't take a bag, what exactly is he supposed to do? There are enough variations of things people just have to have with them that some sort of bag should be allowed, but I'm all for it being clear and transparent. It's the day and age we live in.

SECSports.com's store is selling the heavier clear plastic bags now for each team (the totes look nice), so I'm assuming most will end up adopting the policy.

That's the first I've heard about Tennessee or Florida doing this. They might want to do a better job telling us if they indeed plan on doing it this year.

Yea, they really should. Here is the link. My guess is, like Alabama, they sent most of the information to season ticket holders. Like I said above, some folks who don't have season tickets are going to show up and have a rude awakening.

Sounds like a cash grab, tbh. This sells plastic bags which schools will make money from and if schools end the policy due to complaints later they'll still have our money.
