That was my point. Also, at LSU and Bama, Saban has a distinct and definitive advantage over Tubbs. Specifically in attracting top talent and recruiting (Bama - state school that historically and even to this day pulls more of the top instate talent and LSU - no other big time in state D1 program).
Put Tubbs and Dinky in the exact same setting and Tubbs consistently wins more games IMO. And I think Tubbs wins 2/3 of the catagories listed (player development and game day coaching). Recruiting, Saban wins but not by a lot (see advantages he has enjoyed above).

Like an earlier poster said, I think the main reason Shula went 10-2 is the defensive talent we had. As far as going 10-2, I'm not looking for that this year at all. I think most logical Bama fans acknowledge that an 8 win season would be a good year, considering we're on the road to the elite teams in the conference this year. I believe 9 would be a total surprise and greatly unexpected. My opinion anyhow.

Mark, DeMeco, and Roman were the reason we went 10-2. Shula was lucky to have them, as was the university as a whole.

DeMeco was a face-eater. I liked watching him play.

Yes, yes he was. All three of the guys I mentioned are doing very well in the NFL too. Though DeMeco is ripping it apart!

I do think he is a great recruiter, but if he doesn't win more this year - like at least 8 - he will lose some of his success and momentum in recruiting
Recruiting is Sabans trump card. He gets overwhelming talent on his defenses and lets them win the games. He is in the early stages of this at Alabama now. Im not so sure you are going to win on just defense in this league anymore with the wide open offenses, talent level, and quality coaching. Only the good AND lucky teams will go 10-2 and 11-1.

I don't think that quote is a statement BY Bryant, but rather a comment that was made ABOUT him by a sportscaster that caught on and has been repeated alot over the years.
That was actually a statement made by Bum Phillips when he was the head coach for the Houston oilers and the statement was;
"He can take hisen and beat yoursen or he can take yoursen and beat hisen."

I would say 8-4. Clemson might put it on 'em right out the gate. I'm just not sold on J.P. Wilson at this point to predict a 10-2 season.

quote:i am getting really tired of this. tubbs is a really good coach and should (minimum) have a national championship appearance to his name. but 1 SEC title < 2 SEC titles and NC. those are the measuring sticks. tubbs has a GREAT record against top 10 teams-- its actually pretty remarkable, but fact is, hes losing too many games he shouldnt- and probably winning more games than he should too.
I think if talent is equal, on a neutral field, Tubby beats Saban 8 of 10 times.
and lets put this "more with less" argument to rest. lets stop pretending he has UAB's roster. he has SEC caliber talent. he finishes with top 20 classes. he has 85 schollies like the rest. just b/c rivals has awburn rated lower doesnt mean shite. those are fun, subjective ratings for fans to beat their chest about(or in some cases claim national championships) and dont amount to shite.
bottomline: tubbs has SEC talent like everyone else, wins alot of games against top competition, then rolls over the next week against ar-kansas and lower tier schools.

Tubbs roll over,? I see LSU roll over to Arky and UK as well. Any SEC team can beat you at anytime.

This year he did, no question. The Mississippi State and USF losses were inexusable. The UGA loss could have been a little more competitive on our part as well. Overall, this wasn't a great year, and we did underperform against teams we should have beat.

I think what people fail to realize is that Auburn is just Auburn and beating Alabama is enough for them. Nobody really expects greatness from Auburn because they have never achieved it and they will always just be the other team in Alabama. Those are just the facts.

This year he did, no question

Well looking back...
In 2005 Auburn lost to Georgia Tech to kick off the season. That is one terrible loss. We then lost to LSU in overtime(We didn't underperform in that game, we played really well). We then won out until we lost our bowl game to Wisconsin. 9-3 record
In 2006 we were in the top ten virtually all year. We lost to Arkansas, who was pretty good that year, and Georgia, who was average. 11-2 record
I guess you have a point...

Against State, there was 5 turnovers. That isn't on Tubbs so much.

Thats funny you gumps have the balls to come on here and talk shite about the team who has handed you fools your asses 6 years in a row. You gumps are not in a position to talk shite about anyone. You idiots should concentrate on beating ULM and hoping your coach doesnt leave you soon.

True, but the loss hurt pretty bad. Congrats to State though, they had a good season.
