Shula was paying for the SINS of Mike Price and NCAA Probation

Sure - he inherited a bad situation, no doubt about it.

Alabama was dang lucky to have him

I think for the situation we were in he was about as good as we could get. Steady hand, loved the program, kept everything clean.

He was a much better coach than most Bama fans give him credit for.

No, he really wasn't. He was exactly who most people (including almost all rivals) thought he was. Very average recruiter, very average and repetitive play caller and a pretty good QB coach. He was too loyal to bad staff and he wasn't a great manager.

I think he would make a great head coach now....

I would love to see him get another opportunity if that is what he wants. I'm not really sure he wants to go back to college ball. Seems like an NFL guy for good now.

I agree somewhat. Shula wasn't ready for the job at the time. He is good for the NFL though.

And Bama fans are the poster boys for deranged sports fans. Of course no one expects yall to ever get that. It always ends with yall getting in a group and claiming the rest world is wrong and yall are the normal ones.

He had one of the 5 best CFB players of the last 50 years in an offense that is almost impossible to stop with a guy like that and a very good O-line - which they also had.

It was the perfect storm and Chizik rode the wave.

^^this + Fairley and other solid defensive linemen(Clayton, Carter, Blanc, etc) with opportunistic defensive backs and Bynes at MLB.

Great kicker in Byrum.

Good karma.

Not all Bama fans thought Stallings was good. Look at his record everywhere else but Bama. You also will not find Stallings on any greatest of all time lists like Saban and Bear so yes it can be done.

As far as Shula goes it's a little unfair to try to rank him at all considering his coaching tenure was marred by extreme sanctions. Nobody and I mean not even Saban would have won at Bama from 01-06. We didn't hire shula because he was the best coach, He was just the only one who would take the job under the circumstances. For that matter Fran wouldn't have been the coach either. Butch Davis was the next coach and was gonna be named Jan 3rd 2001 until he was spooked by the NCAA investigation. The numbers weren't gonna be there. In an interview butch said he didn't want to have to deal with what he dealt with when he took the Miami job again. Today, Butch would walk to ttown for that job but not then. Even our 08 team was still short of 85 players believe it or not.

Well at least there's meat on this bone. Unlike threads that are only living due to OP over posting.

Miles is an elite coach imo, Oklahoma State owned Oklahoma while he was there.

The man averages 10 wins a year in the best conference on the planet.

Stallings is in the college football hall of fame...

Nobody would argue he's an all time elite coach or anything, but he's way, way above "mediocre"

In fact it's pretty clear he was a great coach. Pretty much had Alabama a fixture in the top 10 and averaging 10 wins a season.

There are levels of coaching between "mediocre" and Saban/Bryant.

The real question is can saban win anything without having by far the better talent or the number one recruiting class 100 years in a row

The dolphin from ace Ventura says no

I'm surprised that a thread that namechecks Shula in the OP got so many bites

so do you consider Bill Curry a great coach? he had the highest winning % behind Bryant at Alabama when he was fired, maybe still? had Bama a fixture in the top 10 and had 10 win seasons and yet he, just like Stallings was average to below average everywhere else he coached. keep trying corky, you will figure it out.

Curry went 26-10 (72%) and 14-6 (70%) in the SEC. He finished in the Top 10 1 of 3 years, and had 0 Top 5 finishes.

Stallings went 70-16-1 (81%) and 44-9-1 (82%) in the SEC. He finished in the Top 10 3 of 7 years and the Top 5 3 of 7 years.

And, of course, Stallings had 2 undefeated regular seasons and 1 undefeated National Championship. And, under the old rules of the SEC Curry played under, would have had 2 SEC Championships (1992 and 1994).

So, yea, Stallings was a step or two above Curry.

Alabama has to have a great coach to win.

If you take away all the national championship coaches Bama has had, they would have a grand total of ZERO national championships.
