Everybody...everybody knows that Auburn paid for Cam Newton. Even the Auburn fans know it. Some of them just won't admit it.

I think it's good work by AU that in a year of investigation the NCAA didn't find any other solid threads to pull on (including any more traditional booster benefits to Cam and others).

I don't think it's particularly any achievement by AU that nothing was found on the original Cam claims, as the far more likely scenario is that Auburn wasn't asked and didn't pay for Cam after his father got his hand slapped at MSU. I think there are two big disconnects in the Cam story, first being that Cam wasn't a 180k recruit at the time, and the second being that Auburn wasn't going to knowingly win a bidding war with another SEC school where the father of the recruit openly sought money from the other SEC school.

People ignore that Cecil and Cam were tainted goods at that point, Cecil didn't really have the leverage to pull off that approach after MSU.
Not that it matters in the least, but I believe exactly what you posted.

Cam Newton coming out of Blinn wasn't worth $180,000 and Cecil screwed the pooch when he put Cam on the auction block.

The absolute best case scenario for the Newton's was for Cam to come to Auburn (close to his home), separate himself from the slave traders Cecil had brokered with, and ride around on a scooter under the 24/7 protection and watchful eye of Tim Jackson.

Yes! The former staff and state of the NCAA was not effective and lost its way.

Miami and Auburn opened the box, and the NCAA cleaned house and restructured.

It's not fair they got off. But the box has to be closed now.

Miami got off because of NCAA Discovery Tactics and a threat of a lawsuit. Auburn "got off" because they could not find anything. Big difference.

Yep. After everything settled down I've had some candid convos with some compliance folks (attorneys at legal functions and the like) who take the position we're taking.

AU learned relatively early of the MSU situation, they recognized that it was mutually beneficial at that point for AU to get a target and for Cam to find a major program to play in, they thought it was worth the gamble if AU was open and diligent about ensuring compliance, and they would batten down the hatches (not only with Cam but throughout the program) and wait for what was probably going to be an inevitable storm.

If Cam hadn't become a huge story, it may have been overkill. In the end it obviously wasn't, and it paid off huge. Had that not been the approach, I think it's more likely the NCAA would have found something, Cam or otherwise.

Hell, Auburn went a step further and pulled Rich McGlynn straight out of the office of Enforcement Services arm of the NCAA and hired him as AU Director of Compliance.

Rich is a hard arse on compliance, just ask Bruce; smart move by AU though.

WTF does that have to do with the assertion that the NCAA investigated LF?

Maybe you should follow the conversations within the thread a little closer.

To me it's not worth arguing over. The fact is that NCAA after those 2 events cleaned house and restructured. Sincerely that time, they have been on a mission.

They slammed SMU again, they issued one of the largest show causes to a coach etc etc....

They are not in a playing mood anymore and the aim to close the perception about them being toothless.

I have always wondered about that. AFTER money was talked about with Miss. St. boosters, and supposedly one coach, St. kept recruiting Cam for another 5 weeks. That part of the story always get glossed over.

The difference between ole miss and auburn, is that auburn cleaned up the paper trail.

You guys didn't, so you got caught. Now the NCAA dick is about to penetrate that booty.

All schools cheat, Alabama, auburn, LSU, ole miss, Georgia, everyone, but they don't get caught doing it.

Maybe when ole miss fires freeze, y'all will get a coach that can do things the right way.

Rich is very willing to discuss the nuances of the Newton (and Pearl, now) situation at this point. He knows it's a huge resume item for him.
