How was he pumping sunshine? He was running the show as he usually does. He's the head coach. Actually, the SEC network folks were praising the way it was setup and talking about how fun it was. The circle of life drill was a great way to start the day, got everyone fired up.

I couldn't tell you if bama did sack races or not at their spring game, as I didn't watch and couldn't care less.

Butch thanks all of y'all for tuning in.

Vol fans know there isn't a dime's worth of difference between Bruce Pearl and Butch Jones. In fact, the first person Butch started to remind us of was Bruce. And before anyone starts Pearl inherited a stud players CJ Watson and Chris Lofton and beyond that it's a lot easier to fix basketball than football. Jones inherited a dumpster fire several recruiting classes behind being SEC quality. Yet, outsiders love them some Bruce.

At any rate, if you don't like it/think this is new, especially a UT see the Ray Mears - the reason the orange jacket is worn and originator of all things showmaship at UT as well as being a damned good coach (17th winningest in NCAA history). Mears understood that fans would respond to a show as well as the value of pumping up the crowd with various things prior to the game. As a showman Pearl will be the first to admit how much he models himself after Mears. I have no problems with Butch sharing similar qualities.

As for those of y'all bitching about the mic 1. he uses it in practices 2. he is far from he only coach that uses a mic. 3. lighten up folks. A spring game should be fun for fans and players and it was def. fun for us.

To give you some ideas about how influential Ray Mears was then and even now here are some examples from his obit in 2007 (he died at 80):

quote:

Mears was also known for his promotional flair. He spearheaded the idea of Big Orange Country as the designated region for school support. He reveled in wearing bright orange blazers and enjoyed parading along the sideline to agitate opponents. In the 1960s, he even allowed one of his players to ride a unicycle on the court to entertain the crowd during pregame warm-ups.

Yet again, he was the 17th winning all time. And the part I highlighted: can you even imagine basketball without it??? No coaches pacing or yelling/giving death stares? Crazy.

And as if things couldn't get better:

quote:

In the days before the shot clock, Mears’s teams at Tennessee were known for their deliberate offense — a style of play that infuriated Kentucky’s Hall of Fame coach, Adolph Rupp, Mears’s main rival.

How can you not love that?

The man was an innovator in every way. And has had an enormous influences on coaches from every sport. Showmanship and innovation (while keeping to the most important traditions) at Tennessee IS our tradition. We are a school that enjoys exploring the new and a fanbase that wants to have fun.

He would still beat Yellow Brick Sabans arse in a fight.

As long as that fight wasn't on a football field.

And if a 47 year old can't beat up a 63 year old, then he's a total pus.

I honestly do not see the similarities between Butch and Bruce.

Yes, they're both PR savvy but Bruce is much, much more genuine feeling. I would not trust either guy as far as I could throw them, but Butch just feels like a cliche robot. Bruce is someone who you could imagine sitting and having a beer with. He is a good story teller and generally honest and entertaining in interviews. Much more open. Butch's interviews and public appearances are as dull and as it gets and I don't feel like he's ever being honest. Cliche after cliche after cliche. Butch does not even seem like a real person to me when I hear him talk.

Nope, there is this man named Hugh Freeze. Hugh is like the cool kid in (a rural) high school, Butch is the cool kid in summer camp.

I've never seen a coach who cared this much about off the field gimmicks. There is no slogan, alternate uniform, or publicity stunt that he isn't willing to try. It smells of desperation.

The Circle of Life is a perfect example.

WTF Is This?

Amen - I watched a snipet of LSU & AU's spring game because it was mixed in with ours on the SECNetwork. Hell, I didn't even watch ALL of our spring game.

I don't think he's getting under anyone's skin. I don't care what he does. He's just a cheeseball.

We'll see if his style works at UT. It's put up or shut up time for UT.

Yeah, if we don't win 10+ games, it's time to fire him and get our 5th head coach in 8 years...

Not really, UT has to stick with Jones for the long haul. Changing coaches every couple/few years gains nothing.
