FWIW I think this can work well for both schools. As an LSU fan I appreciate Chavis and all the things he did for LSU. I would say he is elite in that he has been a high paid top assistant for many years at two power programs. I was often frustrated by his prevent defenses at the end of the games, but to say he is not one of he best is plain wrong. I also think he LSU was ready for him to move on and he was ready as well.
It's always a risk when you replace a coach and LSU is risking not making a good hire but feel that we will hire someone who will bring much needed energy into our program (nothing against chavis) and given we are willng to pay a good amount think we will get a big name.
Time will tell but sometimes it's just time to make a change.

You Aggies like you've lit up the scoreboard this year......You didn't even score 40 against WV.

I don't think that any DC in the country is elite. There aren't a handful that have completely separated themselves from everyone else like there has been in the head coaching realm. That said, I loved having Chavis as a DC. I knew as long as he was coaching that the defense was in good hands. I also believe that the next guy that comes to LSU can potentially be the same calibur or better. Chavis is a strong DC, but his system has weaknesses, which have been mentioned in this thread so far. aTm is getting a great coach and person and should be happy with the hire.
As far as why he left, I think it started early in the year when LSU only offered him a one year extension to coach through 2015 at the same salary. I think that offer was a slap in the face to Chavis and started the ball rolling. Then as we get to the 11th hour and aTm has now offered, LSU offers him less money for less years and will only guarantee it up to 6 months after Les leaves, if he does. Again another slap in the face. At the end of the day, I think our AD made choices that made Chief feel he wasn't appreciated and that's why he left. It had a lot more to do with what LSU didn't do than what aTm did do.

This is the truth, but people refuse to accept it. Oh well

Chavis is elite. Aggies got a great one.
LSU fans will change their tune after a few weeks of the '15-'16 season.

One thing LSU fans seem to not know (you've been spoiled by Les) is that the vast majority of coaches/teams are very close to 50% win/loss when the game is decided by a touchdown or less. On the flip side, LSU has a winning record (the only FBS team to have one) when trailing in the 4th quarter. Chavis has made some mistakes, fine. No one is perfect. But he is Elite, and to say otherwise now is hilarious.

Your record this year had to do with your awful offense.
Seriously, it would be like Ags blaming their offense for all the losses the past 2 years.

I guess the excitement is just due to something new? Other than that I don't get it with LSU fans. From my perspective, it's like they've got a dead battery on their car and one tire that maybe has a slow leak (maybe). Instead of changing the battery they opt for new tires. It's still not gonna get you anywhere.
Great analogy.

But if the school thought Chavis was elite, we'd have kept him.
The school couldn't afford it

Chavis is elite if you consider elite a top 5 DC. Just accept Alleva and Les screwed this up and move on. TAMU paid up and made a good hire.
