This and the decision to NOT kick a field goal earlier in the game. Those two play calls lost them the game. You have to put that one on your coach, fortunately he has made enough good calls to make up for it.
They needed points, but there is no way he thought that kid had the leg for that kick. At least not at a high percentage. If it went in to overtime I think AU definitely wins, Bama's D-line was absolutely gassed by the end of that game. And I'm sure this was all going through Saban's mind.
All credit to AU for the win, and yes - luck plays as much part in a championship season as anything else.
That said, we missed 3 other FGs outside of the insanely long one. 2 44 yard attempts and 1 33 yard attempts, plus the decision to go on 4th and 1 from the AU 13.
We left too many points on the field to deserve the win. We failed to capitalize on Auburn's biggest error of the night - going for it on 4th down fairly deep in their own territory.
Is it frustrating to know we had so many opportunities to score, and remove that last play from consideration? Of course it is. There was a potential 12 points burned away just in FGs and 4th down attempts instead of FG attempt alone, not even considering the frustration of failure to convert on third down and turns those longer FG kicks into shorter ones, or just outright score TDs.
But meh, it's just a game. After it ended, I turned off the TV and went to the movies with my wife. So... eh? It's fun to talk about, not so great to obsess over. I had to go to ESPN's box score to look up how many missed FGs we had.
