It's just a dumb cheap shot that isn't very clever. Typical of people who like to shite on the South - wow, totally original perspective.
90% of the people rolling Toomers are students or kids and their parents. Most of whom are probably solidly middle class and decently educated. While I don't mind a TP joke, it's just lame to portray it as a bunch of bumpkins doing some redneck activity.
It's especially lame from someone like Simmons, who fancies himself such a unique mind in sports media.
Stuff like this always reminds me of a Todd Barry (comedian) bit I've posted before:

tillman was a democrat who has been dead for 100 plus years. no need to make it up. not sure why you need to beat up on a dead man , he can't be held accountable at this point. maybe you should build a time machine and go back in time and deal with him.
