Before any UT fan comes in with the Peyton argument I for one believe they got it right with Woodson that year, he had an incredible season.

Johnny Majors...should have won it over Paul Hourning.

Among Hourning's stellar stat line...he threw 3 tds and 13 interceptions for a Notre Dame team that finished 2-9. He is the only heisman winner to play for a team with a losing record.

Majors led his team to an undefeated season (their only loss was the Sugar Bowl...which was long after the Heisman voting).

Woodson punched David Boston in the head early in the 3rd quarter, and should have been ejected from the game....(he would have, had the game been in Columbus, rather than Ann Arbor).

Peyton Manning, case closed.

Tell me how are you going to pick Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf?

Manning
287 completions/447 attempts - 60.2% - 3,819 yards - 36td/11int

Leaf
227 completions/410 attempts - 55.4% - 3,968 yards - 34tds/11int

Those stats do a pretty good job of convincing me to pick Manning.

I know I'm biased, but Manning didn't deserve the Heisman after his performance against South Carolina. We were pretty damn bad that year (I remember not making a bowl) and he was like 8/27 - 115 yards - 1 interception - 0 touchdowns.

Tennessee fans like to forget about that game and sweep it under the rug.

"Pretty good job convincing"?

They are essentially the same. Manning threw the ball roughly 40 times more and had 2 more touchdowns. That's it.

Charles Woodson was pretty damn awesome that year. Anyone who thinks he didn't deserve the award is a

racist
defensive playerist
and a yankeeist

and has probably butt chugged at least once in his life

He threw it 40 more times and still had +5% completions. The number of TDs does that really interest me. The same amount of interceptions is more impressive.

I also think Manning's career would've been a factor. But I also think that hurt him because there was a little bit of fatigue out there over hearing about him for 3 years.

1997 Strength of Schedule Rankings:

2) Tennessee
35) Washington State

Those numbers are pretty different.

Let me start this by saying this isn't a troll, but a serious question since I wasn't even close to being around at that time.

Why was Hornung Heisman considered a travesty? Was it just because Notre Dame had a bad team?

Because Paul Hornung is considered an all time great in college and the NFL. im sure he was pretty damn good that year

3 TDs to 13 INTs on a 2-9 football team aren't heisman worthy any way you look at it

Again I am going to ask why?

He was not:

Unanimous 1st team All American
O'Brien Award Winner
AP Player of the Year

He did though:

Have less yards
Have less TD's
Have more int's
