Lived in Bama and NC. It really isn't close. The Iron Bowl is taken far more seriously, has longer lasting implications and is generally a bigger deal outside of the region than Duke/UNC basketball.

It was 1991, but in all fairness I also got into KU, Bama, UGA, and Utah (I was all over the board).
That definitely wouldn't be the case for UG now, not since they got the HOPE started.

Hell no, not now. But it wasn't that hard back then. Wanted to go to UF too, but knew I couldn't get in then (in-state).

It's all the damn yankees and foreigners who make it so hard to get into UF.

UNC is a top 5 public college.
nah, they should lose their accreditation. 3100 students in fake classes.

Any basketball rivalry has to take a backseat to football because
1. It's not football
2. They play twice a year, maybe 3 in the conference tournament
3. You could lose to your most hated rival twice and still win the conference and national title
Basically, any one basketball game that is not in the NCAA tournament has a very low value/importance.
This. I would also put Michigan/OSU higher than Duke/UNC. Nothing better than watching two teams that absolutely hate each other play a physical game of football.

This, and the game is the actual story every game, not the stupid shite the fans are doing. It's more pure.

Please. Iron Bowl and not even close. I would even put the DSOR before some stupid hoops rivalry.
When Duke and UNC can get 100,000 people watching live and the kinds of TV ratings the IB and the DSOR get, then we can talk.

In terms of contempt between the actual teams, Alabama/Auburn isn't really up there imo. I've never watched an iron bowl and had that hate stand out like in other rivalries.
Fwiw, UNC/Duke isn't particularly hateful between players either

Okay, so basically everyone outside of Auburn and Alabama fans think UNC/Duke rivalry is better. I'm sure their opinions are unbiased.

The IB players usually know each other and respect each other. The fans fricking HATE each other though.

They are both very good traditional Rivalries, but being Great or better than one or the other is all perspective. To those 4 fan bases I'm sure they each consider theirs as the greatest. However to die hard fans of other fan bases they mean no more than any other rivalry; they have just had the benefit of ESPN over hype.

Iron Bowl.
Duke/UNC is good but you have to think, ESPN who gets all the games is ran by a UNC grad. They hire tons of ex Duke and UNC players and they talk up the game all season. If the games were on CBS they wouldn't hype it up as much. It's still a good rivalry but not on the level of Auburn/Bama. Iron bowl is played once a year, so winner has bragging rights for 365 days. Loser of Duke/UNC gets a second and possibly third chance. More at stake with just one game.
