1989 saw two of the best college baseball teams ever not make Omaha. State was 54-14 and got upset by North Carolina in the regional.

Our regular season record in 1989 was unreal. Not making Omaha was a huge disappointment that season.

I'd have to have last year's Vandy team and the '98 LSU Tigers in the top 5. The pitching for Vandy last year was just sick and many of us thought they might repeat.
The '98 Tiger team was going for a three-peat, had 3 players with 27 or more homers, including the national PoY. Unfortunately, they finished 3rd in Omaha, losing two close games to eventual national champ, USC.

We didn't have the greatest regular season last year, but UF was on freaking fire going into the post season last year. That one is probably the most disappointing because we were playing great at the right time.

frick that motherfricking red-faced pitcher from Virginia. Got us twice.

Quality. So close to a 3-peat. No exact science, though. I just threw 5 out from 5 different teams hoping to get a decent,flame-free thread.

I could have gone:

1. 1987 LSU
2. 1998 LSU
3. 1986 LSU
4. 1990 LSU
5. 1989 LSU

Clark, Palmeiro, Thigpen and Brantley were all on the same TEAM at Mississippi State. If that was your 4 best players in program history it would be impressive. They were all on the same TEAM. Nuts.

The 1989 Team Stats
.340 AVG
.439 OBP
.542 SLUG
.981 OPS

For comparison .981 would be 10th all time for any individual's career OPS in MLB. Right above Mickey Mantle.

The only other Aggie team that compares was the 1999 squad who did make it to Omaha.

.322 AVG
.399 OBP
.558 SLUG
.957 OPS

Good, but still several points lower.

Now the 2016 team...
.327 AVG
.406 OBP
.493 SLUG
.899 OPS

A&M leads the SEC in all 4 categories, but it doesn't compare to the old #s. A lot of that probably has to do with the bats, even though they fixed the balls.

Last year was supposed to be a year away type of year for UF.

Then they got hot at the right time.

This year would be a MASSIVE disappointment if UF doesn't win it all.

And the 2011 team was far better than 2005. Just Michael Roth...

For LSU to have gone into College Station having to beat that Texas A&M team was remarkable.

Beat A&M twice. They averaged over 20 runs a game in the first 3 games of that regional.

2002 Gamecock team was a damn good squad as well, lost to Texas in the finals, the year they had Huston Street and a few other studs. The Gamecocks finished the SEC at 21-8 and 57-18 overall. Team BA of .312 and a OBPS of .897 team ERA of 4.3 back in the day of Gorilla ball.

edit: more in depth statistical look at the team 2002 Gamecocks

I'd include 1998 LSU. We were a change in the wind direction at Rosenblatt from winning a third straight national title.
