note : Omaha and CWS . This is about college baseball. No need to post if you don't care about the sport.
Some prior threads about the best "almost" football teams (pretty sure there's been a basketball one?). Why not baseball? Whether you like the sport or not, the SEC has had some remarkable players and a whole lot of two sport players in the 50's through 70's that played either football or basketball for your team that would surprise you.
With that ,here are my top 5:
1. 1985 Miss State
2. 1983 Alabama
3. 1987 LSU
4. 2005 Florida
5. 1967 Auburn

Georgia squad that lost to Fresno was pretty stacked.
Gordon Beckham was one of the biggest "freaks" we've had in the SEC in a while. A ton of fun to watch.

Junior All-American Gordon Beckham provided Georgia with its run in the eighth on a home run to left. It was an NCAA-leading 28th home run of the season for Beckham, sharing the title with Louisiana State's Matt Clark. He finished the game 2-for-4 bringing his 2008 hit total to 113, a new school record for hits in a season. Additionally, his final batting average this season was .411 (113-for-275) as he became the first Bulldog to hit .400 or better since 1982 when Buck Belue led the SEC at .447. Beckham also finishes this year with school single-season record for home runs (28), runs scored (97), runs batted in (77) and total bases (221). For his Georgia career, Beckham ranks first in home runs (53), second in total bases (491) and runs scored (201), third in RBI (182) and hits (263) and fourth in doubles (59).
Beckham's final at-bat at home in Athens at Foley Field was a home run against N.C. State in Super Regional action, and his last at-bat at the CWS was also a home run.

I think our 2011 team was better than our 2005 team.

UGA 2008. frick Steve Detweiler; single handedly beat us in game 3 of the finals. IIRC Fresno was playing with some of the better aluminum bats at the time (ball really popped off) while we played with some meh Nike bats or something along those lines. Had quite a few that got to the wall and just missed leaving the park; very close to running away with it all

2011 was sweet revenge for that 1997 CWS loss

We also beat LSU 2/3 at home, including 28-2 in game 2 of the series. But, yea.

I mean, basically, yea.
It was the baseball equivalent of 21-0, really.

That '85 team at State was stacked. If that ball doesnt go off Gene Morgan's shoe, State wins the title going away that year.
1989 saw two of the best college baseball teams ever not make Omaha. State was 54-12 and the consensus No. 1 in the country and got upset by North Carolina twice in the regional final. Texas A&M scored 65 runs in the first three games of their regional and LSU come back and beat them twice.

Can't argue with that. Dude was the GOAT.
1996 and 1997 we were the #1 seed in the entire NCAA Tournament and in 1996 we lost 15-1 to Miami then lost 14-13 to Clemson and then 1997 was the LSU game. 1997 was even worse because we had lost AGAIN to Miami 6-1 and then came back and beat them 2 times to get to the title game. Then we shite outselves against LSU. And of course, Roberto Vaz getting hurt during the season.
Damn that made 11 and 12 year old me sad.

2011 Florida needs to be on that list in a big way.

A&M's best team ever though was 1989. They missed out on Omaha yet still finished #2 in the Baseball America (?) final poll. At one point they were 58-5 before the dropped 2 in a row and were eliminated from regionals.

That 1997 Alabama team also lost Roberto Vaz in the Regionals.
Vaz was a 1st-Team All American who went :
.400, 22 HR, 73 RBI in 63 games
But, as per the usual in Alabama Baseball snakebitness in Omaha, Vaz wasn't around for the CWS.
