Same way 2009 Florida comes out ahead of 2009 Alabama in ESPN FPI and S&P systems. Taking the entire body of work (ignoring scores of games and just using data from the games) it determined one was better than the other.
Any formula that determines that 2010 Bama is better than 2010 Auburn is pure horseshite. Auburn was the undefeated SEC & BCS Champion AND beat that same Bama team on their own field AFTER spotting them a 24 points.

The 2011 LSU team would have destroyed the 2012 Bama team. The 2012 LSU team almost beat 2012 Alabama. Should have, actually. The 2012 Bama team was REALLY good. You just have them a little high, in my opinion.
(a) I didn't rank them
(b) Destroyed? Really?

I agree that certain teams, 2010 Alabama being a prime example (Oklahoma has had a few as well) seemingly do things well that game the system.

There is so much wrong with those rankings
2012 Georgia should be in the top 10
2011 LSU should be in the top 2
2012 Alabama should be lower
2012 Texas A&M should not even be near top 10
2013 Alabama is too high
2014 Alabama is too high
2012 Georgia should be in the top 10
2011 LSU should be in the top 2
2012 Alabama should be lower
2012 Texas A&M should not even be near top 10

2012 Georgia should be in the top 10
quote:Probably, but I'd put 2008 Florida above both 2011 Alabama and LSU, but I'd make those 3 the best overall
2011 LSU should be in the top 2
quote:Maybe a few spots, but 4-6 range
2012 Alabama should be lower
quote:Why? Their last 6 games they beat MSU by 25, won @ #1 Alabama, beat OU by 30 in the Cotton Bowl. They lost by 3 to Top 5 Florida and 5 to Top 15 LSU.
2012 Texas A&M should not even be near top 10
quote:2013 Alabama is probably too high, but people forget how good they were going into the Auburn game. But probably 6-7 range. We will see in the coming weeks re: 2014 Bama.
2013 Alabama is too high 2014 Alabama is too high

The methodology is stats driven with little factoring of results.
It's interesting but incomplete as some teams were extremely dominant against outmatched opponents but failed to rise to the occasion at times and got beat.
2010 Bama completely destroyed lesser opponents but lost to the really good teams they faced.
That methodology speaks more to a teams overall potential in some ways.

Exactly. Very well put. It isn't an end all be all for specific rankings but it is a pretty good way to get a feel for teams from different years and is very good when you want to look at more specifics in certain matchups.

Solid list. I think I might have 2008 Florida at #1 but that's splitting hairs.

It is splitting hairs. I just don't think 2008 would beat the 2011 Alabama and LSU teams. Their offense was good, I just feel those two teams would stonewall Florida's offense without a legitimate runner.

That is a good point. Pretty much what we did in 2009.

What about 06 LSU? Scored 33.7 ppg allowed 12.6 ppg. Averaged 417.8 ypg on offense and 242.8 ypg on defense.

Yeah, 2006 LSU over 2010 LSU for sure. That was an amazing team.
Posted on 12/15/14 at 3:33 pm to AlaTiger
I had them ranked right next to each other. I flipped back and forth between the two. But looking back, 2006 prob is better. With playing 2006 Florida and 2006 Auburn that year.
Posted on 12/15/14 at 4:03 pm to LSUtiger89
That team was sick. Top 5 for sure.

How are they not first?
They had 4 teams in their own division finish in the Top 15, all of which they beat...Beat a ranked South Carolina TWICE, then beat Oregon in the natty...The BEST Oregon team to date.
Amazing...

Some really odd choices on there. 2011 Alabama and LSU are obviously 1a/1b. Followed by 2008 Florida and 2010 Auburn.
2012 Texas A&M really? Over a team like 2007 LSU that actually won a championship?
