quote:Les Miles is not a bad coach. His issue is stubbornness to the point that he can't/couldn't recognize that the game was evolving. He refused to make changes to the offense or to allow his OC to be innovative and get a leg up on the competition. He ran a good program, his players loved him, he recruited lights out, he stayed out of any serious NCAA trouble, he funneled players to the pro's, and he was an overall likable guy. The only people who disparaged him and shite all over him were his own fans.
This is a good theory and it works with great head coaches.
However, one can be outcoached as a result of gameday mistakes or strokes of genius
Les Miles has distinguished himself with some spectacular game day buffoonery from time to time. These have not always resulted in losses, but you could hardly attribute the wins to coaching.

That's one way to look at it. Another way is to prepare your team and staff before the game so that everyone knows their job, and executes it to the point where the game is never in question. Saban has done a pretty good job of that, in fact he's 74-13 in this conference in the last decade.
Please look at the OP. The question isn't who the best coach is, it who is the best game day coach ? Know the difference ?

Your post about Les Miles is generally accurate.
He was a great guy, great recruiter and ran a clean program.
with the talent he assembled he was able to average almost 10 wins a season.
He was horrible on game day, unable to manage the clock, manage or keep up with first downs and unable to make adjustments on offense. At times it was spectacular.
Yet, he managed one of the best programs in the country and did so as a class act.

But that's not "game day " coaching which is what this thread is about.
Saban didn't out coach Miles during the game, they both did the same thing, stick to their game plans. The difference is that Saban didn't have to make adjustments during the game, he made his adjustments the month before the game.
