He had horrible recruiters on his staff. We gave him a chance to stay but the condition was he had to hire a new staff. He refused to fire his buddies so we had no choice.

Cutcliffe just seems like that guy who is too stubborn to be great.

If he hired 2-3 recruiters for his staff to bring in talent, his coaching ability alone would make his teams relevant

In looking this up it is interesting that most guys do not have success their second time around after a firing, even if their situation wasn't good at the old job.

Gerry Dinardo : fired LSU, 8-27 at Indiana (fired)

Dennis Franchione : fired A&M, 39-43 at Texas State (retired)

Ron Zook : fired Florida, 34-51 at Illinois (fired)

Houston Nutt : fired Arkansas, 24-26 at Ole Miss (fired)

Bill Curry : fired/resigned Alabama, 26-52 at Kentucky (fired)

Terry Bowden : fired Auburn, 29-9 at UNA, 19-30 at Akron

Danny Ford : fired/resigned Clemson, 26-30-1 at Arkansas (fired)

Hal Mumme : fired/resigned Kentucky, 11-38 at New Mexico State (fired)

Tommy Tuberville : fired Auburn, 20-17 at Texas Tech, 25-14 at Cincinnati

But seriously, Mark Richt should be #1. He is the best coach in UGA history and is the only reason GA is relevant in CFB after hte 90s

Even if he fails at Miami, he will be the best coach fired for on field performance that I can remember.

People, especially UGA fans, forget that they have a pretty poor history pre Richt era.

Rich Rodriguez is doing pretty well at Arizona. He is 33-20 with three 8+ win seasons

For perspective, Arizona only has 1 other coach with three 8+ win seasons (Tommey has 4 of them)

Arkansas.

Full stop.

Ken Hatfield. Lou Holtz.

Basketball? Nolan Richardson. Gary Blair (we didn't fire him, but we did kick him out the door when he got a mildly better offer from the Aggie). Eddie Sutton (again, we didn't fire him but he was forced out).

Not to mention that both Pete Carroll and Barry Switzer wanted the head coaching job at Arkansas and were ignored. If you are an Auburn fan you can add Gus Malzahn who would have sold his testicles to be the Arkansas coach.

Honestly if we let Bert go, and we might, I expect him to go to LSU and win a title or two just because.

Frank Solich at Nebraska. Wonder if they'd take his 9 win seasons now?

The party line was that Holtz resigned, but Broyles said recently (like the last 10 years) that he actually forced Holtz to resign aka fired him.

Holtz pissed some people off with his politics....

Holtz went to Minnesota and had some success there before going to notre dme.

I don't think you can really include guys fired in the NFL (like Stallings or Spurrier). That is a different game

I think Stallings was fired from A&M so he would be at or near the top of the list

Stallings was fired from Texas A&M, spent the next two decades in the NFL, before taking the job at Alabama after being fired from the Cardinals.

While at Alabama he would have a 70-16-1 record and would also win a national championship in 1992.

It's him and Lou Holtz who are the winners.

Sometimes a coach is fired too soon or because of personality conflicts/what have you but usually coaches who reach a big time program... when they are fired its for a pretty good reason.

Nutt, for example, showed at Ole Miss the same pattern he established at Arkansas... win big for a couple of seasons and then tank for a couple of seasons.

Other coaches seem to burn out and even if they get another head coaching gig you can tell they just don't have the sparkle they used to have.

what data pool are you pulling from? What UGA fans do you associate with that don't remember anything prior to 2001?
