Herschel's gotta be in the conversation. Georgia won 3 straight SEC titles, a national championship and never lost 1 conference game with him as the focal point in the backfield.

As far as the best individual season, I'd say Newton in 2010 because he was extraordinary at running the ball and didn't have elite skill players surrounding him.

Derrick Thomas

Overrated, couldn't cover, best playmaker but not best linebacker or player. Not a pure linebacker. Too big to play linebacker. More of just a pass rusher. Non-protypical size for the position.

Just kidding. He was awesome. Amazing player. He was Tyrann Mathieu before there was a Tyrann Mathieu. His game against PSU was legendary.

i think twice, damn shame. his numbers are better than Bo's while playing one less year.

Bo was stuck in the wishbone for part of his career- had he had 3 straight seasons as an I-back- he would have twice the numbers

10 forced fumbles in his career then a record. Had to account for him on every play. Tackling machine, blew up anything near him. Hated by his opponents. He is sadly robbed as being the NCAA single season and career sacks leader by virtue of the fact that no one cared about defense when he played.

I enjoyed watching A&M shut down Bo in the Cotton Bowl.

I'd go with Tebow.

I'm not a mind reader. Also, I'm not your buddy, guy.

Mathieu in two years of work has surpassed DT's FF mark. It will be interesting to see where it ends.

Johnny Majors should be considered in the top 5 all-time. He was the true definition of an Iron Man football player.

Some could argue that Peyton got screwed out of the Heisman, but Johnny finished 2nd to Paul Hornug who played on a 2-8 Notre Shame squad. That's 2 wins and 8 losses.

Johnny, on the other hand, played for a UT team that could've won the National Title if they didn't lose the Sugar Bowl.

This is a very Tough Question with even Tougher answers. I would have to make a Top Dozen or so. Herschel Walker would have to be in the conversation. Many greats from different eras.

John Hannah is my favorite Offensive Lineman of all time and Reggie White on Defense could be right near the top.

Again just so many great ones, I couldn't just pick one.

Some UT fans will tell us that his college career was not that impressive. Which I find interesting.

I never watched Reggie play for the Vols, but he was SEC player of the year, Consensus All-American, Career, game, and season sack record holder for Tennessee.

He couldn't have been that bad.

its a ridiculous comparison. thomas also had 52 sacks. mathieu is a good player, but come on.

Herschel. 3 and out without losing a conference game. Numbers off the charts. He seriously could have won the heisman 3 times if voters weren't inclined to vote for upperclassmen

How many pass break ups interceptions, touchdowns, and punt returns did he have? Come on guy, the guy is a sophomore plays a position that doesn't allow for much sacks, leads his team in tackles, still is as good rushing the passer as anyone in the league and was defensive player of the year. You can fixate on sacks, but there are many other ways for a dominant defensive player to contribute. DT did a little bit of everything, so does Mathieu.

quote:

Owns the school record of 11 forced fumbles, which is four better than the previous record ... The 11 career forced fumbles ranks as the seventh-highest total in NCAA history and is tied with Guss Scott of Florida for the SEC record ... Needs just three forced fumbles to tie the NCAA career record currently held by three players ... Of his 11 forced fumbles, he has recovered six of them and eight of the forced fumbles have resulted in turnovers ... Heads into his junior year as the current NCAA career record holder in forced fumbles per game (0.42) ... His eight career fumble recoveries is tied for third in school history and just three away from tying the school record ... Took over at one of the cornerback positions in 2011 for the departed Patrick Peterson and will man that position again in 2012 ... Recorded 133 career tackles with 93 of those being of the solo variety ... Added 16 tackles for loss of 90 yards, including six sacks for a loss of 48 yards ... Proved to be a dynamic punt returner as well, boasting a 15.6 per return average (27 returns for 421 yards) with two touchdowns ... Has started 14 career games - 10 of those at cornerback, three at nickel back and once at free safety ... Owns four career touchdowns (two punt returns, two fumble recoveries).

Pretty impressive for two years of work and only 14 starts.

Also . . . technically DT has 0 sacks. Infuriatingly ridiculous, yet true.
