Barkley must be extrememly talented to start as a TRUE Freshman for a team with the type of talent as USC. I just hope Pete Carroll doesnt set the bar too high for this kid.

Nice reach. It's Nutt's fault he failed at USC 2 years later... and he can barely qualify academically to play football at USC.

Physically the kid looks like an NFL quarterback..and from what I have read is "THE REAL DEAL"..Mater Dei usually has some PRETTY GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYERS..Kid must be pretty special to start as a true freshman..

Mater Dei
People make a big deal out of Matt Cassell to be a NFL QB while never starting in college. Colt Brennan is in the NFL and he did not start at high school. He played at Mater Dei the same time Matt Leinart did.

Barkley defintely has all the tools and wasn't named the player of the year coming out of high school for nothing. But I saw him get knocked around and throw 2 pick 6s when Mater Dei got knocked out of the play-offs last year, so he's not infallible (is anyone?).

It is interesting that Pete's starting a true freshman. He's never done it at USC and I read some speculation somewhere that it's a first at USC. But mostly it really says a lot about Mustain that a kid that just joined the program is starting instead of Mustain in spite of the fact Mustain been in the program through two seasons.

I've seen talk that not knowing the play book is part of the reason he's not starting. I've also seen talk that Mustain's struggled to maintain his grades, so it might be that Carroll doesn't want to take a chance and invest a season in someone who may not remain eligible.

I think they're pretty under rated right now and could surprise. People speak of their tremendous losses to the NFL draft but don't really realize their replacements have a lot of quality PT.

Exactly. The kid obviously has some talent, as he displayed as a freshman at Arkansas, and could be starting at a lot of schools. Thus, my original point, not a smart move to transfer to USC (unless it was, at the least, to just learn in that system and get a great education).

It really wasn't a good idea for Mustain to go to USC. He really needs to go to a lower division school.

Yep, I was thinking he might transfer and try to play somewhere else this year after Corp was named the starter coming out of spring practice.

Mustain's a good kid. He never showed anything but class at Arkansas.

You've bought a line of Nutt trash to hate on this kid.

He's got more courage and class than most people on this board.

If he's such a bad kid, show me one quote, or one interview where he's ever represented himself as anything remotely close to that.

That said, after he left Arkansas (where its MY opinion he got shafted) I really don't give a frick what he does. I don't wish bad on him, though. He is a really good kid from all I have seen, in spite of growing up in a single parent household.

8-0 as a starter at Arkansas. It takes a lot of creativity to hate the kid.

I'm sure a lot of smaller schools would be interested in him. Hell at the time he left Arkansas he might have a good chance to start for State or Auburn.

Good qb/good kid, but I think when he left Arkansas, and can't blame for what he did, but I think he should have gone to another school other than USC-W. Too much competition. They get 5* kids on a regular basis. At Arkansas he was a big fish in a small pond. At USC, he's a small fish in a big pond and got ate up.
