Here is the link to the actual research.

Here is the chart for the SEC

The bias is AGAINST the flagship team

Haven't read the article yet, but if they are only looking at the numbers of penalties and not the film to see how many should have been called, then that is problem with this study. Some teams don't commit as many penalties as others, so obviously they wouldn't have as many penalties and rightfully so.

Also where the ball is spotted, questionable turnovers, etc. that weren't factored in. The study just shows some bias...something we all knew already.

The "protected flagship" column shows less likely on your graph...meaning less likely to be penalized. BIAS is against whoever they are playing.

Alabama is ranked 128 out of 128 teams of opponents being the least penalized.

Incorrect. It means that if you are "protect and flagship" in the SEC, calls are less likely to favor you

Bama opponents have fewest penalties called against them than any of the SEC teams opponents do. If anything, in 2016 at least, Tide opponents are the ones getting benefit of discretionary penalties.

This Bama team is, I'm pretty sure, one of the most penalized teams in the conference this year.

You would literally have to look at every play of every team with a neutral party. I suppose you could use sampling but the sample sizes would be too small.

You might want to read the board before trying to discredit the source

such a HUGE number!

So out of 10 possible opportunities the "average" team gets called 10 times and Bama gets called 9 times.

Also, read the article. It talks about Flagship teams (of which, for whatever reason, it lists LSU & AU) are also less likely than other teams in the conference to get called for penalties.

But not as likely as the protected flagship schools. Aka contenders.

10% is huge btw. I'm surprised its that large.

I hate to keep proving you wrong...

Here is the wording from your study

quote:

Across all FBS games, the baseline for a non-flagship program is 46.37% probability of any call being discretionary. Being a protected flagship team lowers this probability to 41.40%. When the game is a Power 5 in-conference game (n=13,858), a situation guaranteed to have affiliated officials with both competing teams, the predictors change. Here, average teams can expect 45.14% probability, whereas protected non-flagship teams are actually called for more discretionary fouls (48.8% probability), consistent with Brymer et al.’s (2015) prior findings. However, protected flagship teams fare better than either other group, garnering 43.14% probability of a discretionary call. See Figure 2 below.

Now look at figure 2 in the study

If the probability leans towards less likely you fare better

If my question brought discredit to your source, imagine what I could do with a statement.
