uptown is great, that's why.

I don't really get this thread. I have no problem walking in the quarter by myself.

Just don't venture too far west of bourbon.

If someone bets you money that they know where you got them shoes, don't take the bet.

SIGH. YOU MAKING OUT DOWNTOWN AND BOURBON STREET TO BE LIKE IRAQ? COME ON MAN. like any big city it has its bad areas. i doubt any gumps will be in those areas. they will be fine in downtown. just use common sense.

This. I've walked all over downtown New Orleans by myself multiple times every year for 12 years (with one notable exception). It's no different than any other major city. DOn't get black out drunk, walk with a purpose in less populated areas, don't look like a victim. Do those three things and you will be fine.

If someone does hold you up. Just give them your wallet, and live to tell the story.

Things are more fun in groups, but don't stay holed up in your hotel room because you can't find 4 people to walk down to Bourbon with you.

Avoiding side streets off of Bourbon is insane. Most locals avoid Bourbon Street altogether and somehow manage to have a good time (and not get killed).

Agree with everything except 1 key point.

Stay the hell away from the cops while in the Qtr. They will have Patty wagons backed up to the corner on side streets of Bourbon and will put you in jail for no reason other than it is a scam that makes revenue for the city. It will ruin your trip and cost you about a thousand dollars.

You say....How do you know?

I say .....I have been that guy!

If you need directions....ask anybody but the cops!

Good advice. It's probably safe for a couple guys (not in a relationship with each other LOL) to go down Bourbon Street. Just don't venture into the other streets by yourself.

I've been to Bourbon Street many times and as long as you use common sense and aware of what's around you then you'll be ok.

Besides the obvious of knowing your surroundings and if you turn down a street that is empty, turn around. The biggest thing that will get you into trouble is a Katrina joke, I don't care how many times you are tigerbaited, don't do it, it will get ugly...

Translation: I once thought it would be cool to impress my friends and mouth off to a New Orleans cop, while drunk on Bourbon Street.

Just don't do that and you'll be fine.

Worst advise ever ! If you got arrested in the Quarter, you had to be really drunk and acting like an IDIOT ! N.O. Cops deal with Mardi Gras every year LOL. There will be over 700 NOPD and State troopers downtown this weekend, people will be OK as long as you use common sense. IF you wouldn't do something in your town, don't do it here( other than walking around with a drink ! ). Have fun and there are LOTS of great places off of Bourbon, ask someone at your hotel about some of them, thank me later.

Most of all, if some punk kid says "bet you 5 dollar, I know where you got dem shoes?".

The correct response is " on my feet/pavement"

I live in LA, and will not travel to NOLA without my handgun. Of course, I'm a gun guy, so that's pretty much the rule for everywhere else.
To the like-minded Tide fans: Your concealed handgun permit is honored here- and we are an extremely gun-friendly state. Just use common sense about where to carry (no govt buildings, bars, THE DOME, etc) and you are GTG.

Solid post, OP. Stay safe, everyone.

His post idea was good, but the post itself actually propagated some misconceptions that have been pointed out.....Common sense will keep you safe, and out of jail.

But downtown N.O. Is safe and no one will need a handgun for protection (but if you feel you need it, and you have your permit then carry it if you must).

I will be arriving at the train station and staying at the Hilton. I plan on going to the casino, game and bourbon street. Here is a map. Tell me what streets are not safe. TIA

The other side of the Pontchatrain Expressway (I-10) is bad before St Charles Avenue. You have the Quarter of course, but the Wharehouse District has alot of great places to eat and party and you are right there just go away from the quarter from your hotel but avoid crossing under the I-10. If you want, take Magazine or Prytania uptown and everything is good in terms of eating and drinking. Try Freret St. and Oak aint bad either, These areas are where locals go so it is what I consider "real New Orleans". The line in the sand is St.Charles Avenue, towards the river is good to Magazine St., away from the river within 2 blocks is where our locals stack bodies. I policed this area for 14 years and it turns ugly quick, you'll see it. Have a great time except for 3 and a half hours on monday night and Have a Great Day!
