If you're healthy the Hilton Garden Inn Convention Center is an easy walk from the train station if you're not carrying a lot of luggage. I'd say about 10 city blocks. Walk down Julia Street to South Peters.

It's in the Warehouse District which is pretty safe. I recently lived in the Warehouse District for four years and walked everywhere by myself... never a lick of trouble. As with any city I wouldn't do it at night towing luggage, though.

No. The Hilton Garden Inn is on South Peters.

From there EVERYTHING is within walking distance... the Quarter, the Dome, the streetcars.

You are in for the greatest football bowl destination in the world. New Orleans is super fun and I miss it terribly.

The general advice of the OP is fine, I guess.

However, there's so many people in town that pretty much anyone will be okay walking around the Quarter, Downtown, Warehouse District, at pretty much any hour and in any numbers, through Tuesday.

ahh ok.i just scrolled back and saw your map. you'll be fine. you are in the warehouse district. you can take the street car up St. Charles Avenue through the garden district to uptown if you choose to do something different than just being in the warehouse district, CBD or french quarter. Commander's Palace in the garden district is a great restaurant. It is right next to a cemetary. it is a couple blocks off(below) St. Charles Ave.

You could check out Audubon Zoo also Uptown. You can catch a boat ride up the river to the zoo. Visiting Chalmette(Battle of New Orleans) is probably way too far out of your way to go see if you have no wheels. You can check out the WW2 museum and confederate museums. There are not far from where you are staying.

If going to Bourbon at night, avoid the Canal entrance to Bourbon. And don't walk down any side streets of Bourbon at night.

A few more:
Don't make eye contact with the locals.

Make sure all females cover themselves completely from head to toe, including their faces.

Stay in groups of 20-30 or more with the women and children in the center of the group.

Locate the nearest hospital with a dialysis machine as your kidneys will likely be removed.

Bring your own food and water or boil the local water if you need to use in an emergency.

Thousands of tourest die in the area around the Superdome, CBD and French Quarter every day. This is why they avoid having sporting events in this city.

Seriously, I have been all over this country and have seen the best and worst cities in person. N.O. has its share of warts and scary people, but the areas that most will frequent, and all SHOUD frequent, are as safe as any tourist spots in any town. The incidents that occur with tourists are usuall on a dark side street at 3am. With the number of people in town right now you'd have to look hard to find a desolate are. And if you do, turn around and go back to the populated areas. I'm sure you will encounter a few "con men" who LOOK like they want to kill you, but if you laugh at their nonsensical, barely literate word play and hand them a dollar, you will be fine.

Don't tell people to go to Veterans. I drive it every day, and unless they enjoy Chili's and fast food the restaurants blow. Plus they'll be sitting in traffic the entire time.

ETA: Brooklyn Pizza on vets isn't bad. If I think of anymore I'll add them

You shouldn't walk by yourself down side streets at 3-4 am but other than that you should be fine.

If you feel like downtown is just too crowded which it will be, take a streetcar uptown. There are countless restaurants and bars up that way.

Why oh why would you send them uptown?

Yeah, not sure if I agree with avoiding Canal entrance to Bourbon either. There's a ton of people coming in that way throughout the night and always has a heavy police presence.
