Bama fans, how did you like our coach as an offensive coordinator?

I'd appreciate some genuine perspective from y'all about the job Jim McElwain did with your offense for the three years you had him. Did he do a good job with your QBs? Was his offense fun to watch? Could he adapt week to week and during actual games?
I know he's unproven as an SEC head coach so I'm not really asking about that - time will tell on that front.
And simply, did you like the man?
What I do sometimes wonder about is how much of the good I see on his offensive coaching is just an overcorrection after suffering through the dismal offenses the other guy fielded. I can't think of a better group of fans to discuss this with than y'all.
ETA: I know this is tRant so saying this is totally unnecessary, but please no sugarcoating. I don't want any false impressions since the Gators are far, far more important to me than any single person. If it means anything I love his style as a leader and CEO but we all know that doesn't always translate to long term, on the field success.

I hope he's given enough time to actually get his players in to run his system. Shame he has to deal with some of Muschamp's players on offense.
As an OC, I thought he was really good. Loved his balanced attack and thought he was good at utilizing TE's (Brad Smelly in 2011). My only gripe with him was his red zone play calling.

I think he did a lot with the pieces he had. He never fully got to enjoy the development he was a part of from 2008-11.

I thought he did a good job when he was at Bama. Did good enough to win championships. The offense wasn't flashy but I considered it "fun". I definitely like him as a person too. He knows how to have fun while being a good coach at the same time.

no issues with the man personally ... never met him, but have never heard anything derogatory about him ... saw him interact a couple of times with people, out in public, (waiter and a fan seeking an autograph) and he was about as normal and gracious as one would hope/expect ... think he'll take some of saban's ideas about balance and being able to run the ball at will, if needed, but he'll probably let the qb loose a little more than saban since he won't depend on the defense to the same extent ...

Just popping in to say that I wish we still played Florida every year.

I think his 2009 Florida and the GOTC2 game plans were masterpieces.

i always thought his play calling was especially good in big games.

What did you dislike about his red zone play calling? Too conservative?
And PatDyesPants, I wish the same thing. You guys have gotten the better of us since 2000, that's for sure, but our storied rivalry was a seriously disappointing casualty of SEC scheduling. Getting that one going again would be awesome for both fan bases.

Ruined our latest and possibly greatest shot at our first perfect season Not to mention you gave ole Irvin Myers "heart problems" and hastened his descent into madness. He was so drugged up on Xanax or Haldol in 2010 that anyone who spared a passing glance could tell that the man was a walking zombie that year; not a football coach.

He was fine, nothing too flashy about his calls. Liked his bubble screens a bit much at times, but knew what to call.
If I had to nitpick considering how well his tenure was in Tuscaloosa, I think he "wasted" the talent of Julio Jones.

Loved him. He simplified the offense. If it was 3rd and 4 we simply ran a 5 yard hitch. If it was 3rd and 2 we ran the ball. He seemed to call the right play at the right time.
When he left and we had nussmeier we got a little complicated. That 2012 a&m loss, we had the ball first and goal at the 4 and threw 4 passes when we could have crashed lacy twice and won.
Mac played to our strengths. Easy throws for qbs, 5 to 15 yds, assignment blocking o line instead of zone blocking and called perfect games more often than not.

Under McElwain, I believe Alabama averaged 30+ points per game for 4 consecutive years for the first time in program history.
Loved his offensive philosophy.

If I remember, he wasn't conservative enough. What I mean, Alabama would have a whole drive where the run game was rolling, then the offense would stall in the red zone because of two incomplete passes and only 1 run.
Tiffin had 35 FG attempts in 09. Many of those were in the red zone due to the offense stalling in the red zone.

But honestly, I don't know how much that had to do with him or Saban, so I wouldn't judge him on that.
Mcelwain did a great job at CSU. I just hope he is given enough time to get his players at Florida, because he might embark on some rough years due to the players Muschamp left behind and inexperienced recruits.

He was a beautiful play caller in big games.
Clemson 08.
UGA blackout
SECCG in 09
NCG in 2011. Those are just the games that stand out the most to me where the offensive game plan was perfect.
He was great at getting the best out of limited QB talent. Would have loved to see him with the 2012 team with a Jr McCarron, Amari Cooper, Lacy and the goat Offensive line.
He was a good coach and came highly recommended by Pat Hill.

I liked Mac, but hated Nuss. Definitely not flashy, but a well balanced attack. I think you'd get a better idea looking at the stats in his last couple years at csu.

This is some seriously high praise I'm hearing from you guys, and it's definitely in line with my own hopes as well as my actual observations so far.
We learned our lesson about never again hiring first time head coaches so it was extremely important to we fans and to Jeremy Foley to hire someone with HC experience. The SEC is NOT the appropriate place for on-the-job training, IMO.
Mac has looked extremely up to the task of being a head coach in the SEC and everything that comes with it - meaning the job of running a team, getting the staff and players together on the same page, managing the culture of the team, and being a good role model and teacher for the young men who put their futures in his hands.
Knowing that about Mac means that much more knowing how highly you guys think of him as an X's and O's guy - a football coach, if you will. I really think we've got a good one, and a very large part in what convinced Foley to finally hire him was the slew of glowing recommendations that followed in his wake from every place he had landed in his career up to and including Colorado State.
Besides maybe CSU fans, nobody knows him better than Bama fans and I feel even more optimistic about him now than I did an hour ago.

There was a pre-game hype video played before the game where Spurrier or Gene Stallings I think said that almost verbatim.
ETA: The real heroes in the 2009 SECCG were Greg McElroy and Kirby Smart. Greg just seemed possessed. Not only that, but Tebow was running for his life the entire game from our front seven.

Hah, that's cool, I never saw the video but they're right. The history of the SECCG is almost the same as the recent history of Bama vs UF. Hoping we can finally hold up our end of the deal consistently again.
I go by Spurrier's old philosophy: Atlanta and an SEC Championship are the goals for each season, and anything beyond that is gravy and the chips shall fall where they may. If we're getting to Atlanta on any kind of regular basis, the rest will fall into place.
