What did you dislike about his red zone play calling? Too conservative?

It always felt like once we get to the red zone it wasn't seen by the coaching staff as too big of a deal if we didn't score a TD. Almost like we considered it an automatic 3pts, and with a great defense like we have that could win you tons of games. I don't know how much of that came from Saban though, as that really seemed to be common both before and after McElwain.

Well, it's hard to say based on last year. Like you said, we can't really know too well how much of that was Saban, but more than that the Gators had no kicker to speak of last year so we knew that if we didn't score a TD we were almost certainly coming away with no points. This is a point we'll all be paying close attention to next year since we should get far better quarterback play than we got out of Harris and Pineiro looks like he's going to be a really good kicker.

Possibly, I'm not saying yes or no, but I can breathe a sigh of relief since UF never was nor will ever be stupid enough to hire him as our head coach.

I like your new Head coach

just based on watching how many times a game he hugs and gets close to the guys on the sidelines

seems to be a little thing but I think it is a give away to being a caring soul

as a Tiger I am looking forward to the Lsu/Gator game - it is always such a war

I thought he was solid and did a great job at Bama.He dialed up a lot of great plays in 2009.That Season Bama had several close Games that hinged on a few offensive plays Coach Mac called.

I hope he does well.

eta: Kiffen is good. He's very innovative and is a great QB Coach during the Game.I've been impressed with the job he's done.I hope stays a while.

And PatDyesPants, I wish the same thing. You guys have gotten the better of us since 2000, that's for sure, but our storied rivalry was a seriously disappointing casualty of SEC scheduling. Getting that one going again would be awesome for both fan bases.

I think he was a great offensive coordinator. He made the most out of his players ability or lack thereof. My only concern for him at Florida, is that he doesn't seem like the greatest recruiter. A decided schematic advantage is great, but I worry if he can bring in the Jimmys and the Joes to run his system. His recruiting at CSU was meh, but that again was CSU. Florida should always have top flight recruiting and so far I'm not really seeing it.

I would also interested in Bama's opinion of Nuss. He won a BCS title but he was also ran out of town.

Auburn fans lurking. I don't care what anyone says Auburn is and always will be UF's second SEC rival. I was hoping that expansion would bring y'all to the East somehow.

Nuss always seemed to be positive he was the smartest guy in the room. He was great when things were working, but when they weren't he didn't really seem to be able to adjust. Also, sometimes it was like he'd be the guy on Youtube saying, "Hey, hold my beer" and then things would happen.

We learned our lesson about never again hiring first time head coaches so it was extremely important to we fans and to Jeremy Foley to hire someone with HC experience. The SEC is NOT the appropriate place for on-the-job training, IMO.
Amen to that brother! Bama learned that lesson a while back.

I hated the hire when Saban went and got him. I thought going out west to get an OC would make us soft.
Once again I was proven wrong and I should just trust the guy that knows a little more about football then myself.

I go by Spurrier's old philosophy: Atlanta and an SEC Championship are the goals for each season

McElwain seems to have picked up on Spurrier's other big philosophy which always seemed to work: Throw to get the lead and run to keep it. As long as Florida gets a legit QB in place, I think they got themselves a good coach.

Nuss "cracked" at Bama, really couldn't fix himself after things went south. Takes a certain coach to get an earful from a livid Saban and let it bounce off like you're Teflon.

McElwain was experienced enough not to let the tirades influence his philosophies, Kiffin's brash nature seems to help him

It sure is! I love the LSU game - during normal (read: non-Muschamp) years it's usually an extremely hard-fought and exciting battle. Like I said before, it's sort of "non-rivalry" game, so overall I've found that the fans of both teams carry a great deal of respect for the opposing team and its fans. I know I love helping to host you guys in Gainesville, and I also love the reception I get whenever I come to BR for the game. You guys have lots of awesome fans....and the FOOD...good Lord, the food... Nobody cooks like a Cajun, and y'all are awesome at sharing it too XD!

If we could just learn how to defend those fake kicks Lester loves to pull out of his hat against us, I'd be soooo happy. I can't wait for this year's game. I don't know if we're going to win (you guys obviously have a nice streak going against us right now), but this game usually seems to end up pretty close more often than not. Both teams always have a shot at coming out on top, and that's the way it should be.

I remember watching Alabama play a game late in the 2009 season. I think it might have been against Tennessee. The announcers mentioned that Greg McElroy had a 27% completion percentage in the red zone. That stat alone should tell you about McElwain's abilities as a playcaller in the red zone.

It sounds bad, I'll grant you that, but it is just one cherry-picked statistic from one game. Not a trend and definitely not enough to draw any conclusions from. I will keep it in mind, however, because trends by definition always begin with one point of data.

Thank you for the information!

Can't speak to your original question but here's my honest non-trolling opinion: the one big criticism I have of him as a playcaller last season was that he refused to adapt to Treon's strengths and weaknesses as QB when he knew he'd be the QB the rest of the season. And before y'all say Treon just sucks, I agree that he was terrible last season but I also saw Muschamp, or more specifically Kurt Roper, get a lot more out of him.

That all said, it's too early to say much about Mac as a head coach one way or the other. Last season was so odd it was like UF had two different teams.

Outsiders perspective: He started a QB that put on 40lbs of muscle over the summer to win enough games to take a lead in the SEC East and then proceeded to start him again against Mizzou when he knew he would be suspended the next day by the NCAA. #Jokersloth
