I mentioned a couple of months ago, that even though Avery seems to be a better recruiter, that Ant was actually a better coach. Of course, most Bama posters vehemently disagreed.

I'm even more sure at this point.

They rebound better than we do. We did miss Spencer, but Bama pounded us on the boards.

At some point, AU will have to rebound and play defense better to become a legit tournament team.

We shot hot yesterday.
The pieces are coming to join Wiley, Heron, Purifoy and Harper.

McLemore is a feisty forward.

I think the entire league is improving except LSU and Missouri. LSU will fire the coach soon. Mizzou may as well.

Barnes, Pearl, , Howland have all won at other places. I think each has a chance to build something at their current job

The only thing impressive thing Grant did well was go undefeated at home in his second year and make it to the NIT. He had a team capable of making it to the sweet 16 in his 3rd year and squandered with it because of his putrid offense. He had JaMychal Green, Levi Randolph, Trevor Lacey, Rodney Cooper, Trevor Releford, and Tony Mitchel, yet still sucked. He got lazy on the recruiting trail, pissed off the players (which most transferred), and inevitably got worse.

Avery in his first year essentially had one good player in Obasohan, yet still managed 4 top 25 wins. Hell, if Alabama doesn't implode in like the final 4 games of the last season, there was a serious possibility Alabama could have made the tournament last year. Jury is still out on Avery obviously, but I'd rather wait until he has better players, unlike Shannon Hale and Jimmy Taylor.

Avery by far inherited a better basketball program than Bruce at Auburn. Bruce inherited a program that was lifeless by the time Barbee left.

I call bullshite

Grant walked into a bad team his 1st year and they weren't very good finished 17-15
His second Year he was 12-4 in the SEC should have made the NCAA, ended up going to NIT final four
His 3rd year he made the NCAA tourney 1st time for Bama in 6 years, got screwed against Creighton
His 4th year, his team had injuries but still went 12-6 in the SEC, again snubbed by NCAA on the bubble, NIT quarters.
He was fired after his 4th yr, with a better career record in the SEC than 70% of the guys coaching now, before and after him in the league.

Ha ha, here come the spin

In my opinion, Avery will do very well at UA. All that is required for most SEC schools are some winning records and some consistency in getting to the tourney. Throw in one or two mid-deep runs in the tourney and they will be thought of as one of the best ever at their schools.
I look forward to Avery and Pearl elevating the game at both schools. Should be some fun BB.

My opinion of Avery Johnson is the same for MOST, but not all, basketball coaches. Way more than in football, it takes players, rather than "coaching" to win. Sure a coach can help with X's and O's, but basketball isn't all that complicated.
Bama just needs to get players and possibly the coaching can handle the psychological side of it as well.

Final call = He's OK, but nothing super dynamic yet. He may crash and burn, or he may actually help out Bama in the long run.

Grant's team was not bad year 1:

Tony Mitchell, Mikhail Torrance, JaMychal Green, Chris Hines, Charvez Davis, and Andrew Steele were all good players.

Last year our only good player was Retin. This year Ingram and Hall are OK and Key is a good player.

Also, Grant was here for 6 years not 4. One tournament in 6 years is not good enough.

He was fired in his 6th year after going to the NIT for the 3rd time. His 4th year he went to the NIT quarterfinals with an experienced roster, led by a Trevor Releford having his best year. And he didn't get "snubbed" in year 2 or 4. He benefited from an incredibly weak SEC and had no signature wins, other than Kentucky. The next year, he went 13-19 with Releford as a senior. Then his final year, he went 18-14.

You have no clue what you're talking about.

I say give him time with HIS recruits. If we are having to play some of the players who are in the games significantly it means the cupboard was pretty bare when he arrived.

I don't think there is a coach out there who could do much with the roster we currently have unfortunately. Next year and the year after should give us a better idea of his coaching ability.
