I don't really follow Alabama basketball closely so I will take your word for it but looking at their records Grant went 18-14 and lost in the NIT in the second round in his last year. Johnson went 18-15 and lost in the NIT in the first round in his first year. On paper that doesn't really seem miraculous.

Levi Randolph, Ricky Tarrant and Rodney Cooper were our 3 leading scorers and the only 3 who averaged double digits in 2015. They averaged 63% of our points. They all graduated/transferred. The cupboard behind them was atrocious, and luckily AJ took Retin Obasohan from a 6.2 PPG/48% shooting Junior to a 17.6 PPG/52% shooting Senior, or we would have won 9 games.

Avery has done a solid job so far. Grant left a roster that was pretty devoid of talent and Johnson has rebuilt it to a level we haven't had since the most talented teams of the Gottfried era. He's done a fantastic job selling the program and an above average job coaching the roster. Now, he has to win and make NCAA Tournaments.

That's great that he had those wins but I am guessing that means he lost some head scratchers if he ended up with that record.

Not really. When your one scorer doesn't score, you aren't going to win. Didn't help that his best freshman got hurt early in the season and didn't play again. There was going to be inconsistency. Had some close losses where we just couldn't make a shot late in the game (Oregon, LSU, Auburn, MSU, Arkansas).

considering early signing period is 14 weeks away yes. I'm using it as a measuring stick for the future of the program vs crowd size on a random practice. After the kid from Columbus commits we will have the number one ranked recruiting class in 2018.

Well, I'll use pre-season 2017-18 season rankings and overall national perception of the program for ours with a touch of Top-5 class from 2017 actually on our roster now, including 2 5-stars, 1 of which will be a lottery pick in the 2018 draft.

How's that? Good?

Hey, if Tennessee and Auburn can win preseason championships in football, we can be a preseason contender in basketball.

This was due to AJ's development of Retin and not from a large increase in minutes per game and FGA's per game?

No you wont. It would be #2 behind USC.

I think Howland will eventually do well but his on court results have been dreadful so far. I guess it just takes longer to rebuild a college basketball team than I realized/hoped it would.

Partly because of increased minutes, but a large part was AJ insisting that he attack the basket, something that wasn't part of the previous regime's philosophy for him. He played very timid under Grant and basically became a new player his last year. Because of that he got to the line a lot more and began using bull like body in the lane to get to the basket more. That led to an increase in his shooting percentages and a lot more foul shots (and assists).

More than anything he taught Retin (and all of our guys) to attempt to make plays. Grant had us playing very robotic, very fear of failure type offensive basketball. AJ basically flipped that on it's head (now, we still have very little offensive talent, but that's where 2017 will see if we've made strides).

Retin has said numerous times AJ is the reason he has a job playing basketball in Belgium right now.

the calculator says #1 but i could be wrong though

LINK

as for last year's signing class we filled our needs so if Nick Weatherspoon isn't a one and done... 2019 we should be in the final 4.

As I mentioned he came into an odd situation with having 4 Senior starters in his first year, effectively making it a lost year for all practical purposes. So to me this is really his second year with his own players.

Now as to my remark by Bama fans caring, I was just joking a bit there. I know you do care.

Plus I am a State guy that can't wait for Bama-State to return to the days of the Hump/Coleman being packed to the rafters when we play each other and both teams being elite like back in the 90's and 2000's. That was fun.

I love college basketball and I'm not trying to be a downer, but have any of the SEC teams actually closed the gap on the national powers?

Several teams have made themselves better, but is any team other than UK a contender in the tourney?

The 3 leading scorers on Grant's last team were seniors. Grant would've won single digit games and the team would've averaged 30 points per game if he was still the coach during Avery's first season.

Florida is a contender this year. Also South Carolina taught us last year that if you get in and get hot you can contend for a title.

Over what time frame are we talking because outside of a few down years UF has positioned itself pretty well.

In the last 12 years for UF:
2 national titles
3 Final Fours
7 Elite 8's

We will see in the next 2-3 years. Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, LSU and Missouri all should theoretically have players to make the NCAA Tournament and hopefully make a few runs. If that happens and Arkansas, Florida, Vanderbilt, Kentucky etc stay where they are and A&M and South Carolina continue to be solid the league will be pretty dang good.

The league was so bad, but we've already improved to where there are/will be very few if any horrible teams in the league. The talent has unequivocally improved across the board. Now teams need to win OOC games in December and then make the tournament.
