Chizik is more hands on than say Mack Brown, but he is definitely more of a CEO than Saban. He wants things done his way, but he allows his assistants to coach. Honestly though, I have seen a decent amount of improvement in our young guys. The DT's are finally starting to realize that they have to use sound technique if they want to do anything (however they do forget a good bit still). Unfortunately, as the competition has gotten better, and our flaws have been exposed, it does not seem like there has been much improvement.

I forget who it was but one of the DTs said in a post game interview that he had to learn in a game that being off half a yard really made a lot of different in his alignment. I was a bit shocked by this statement, I'm a bit concerned about Pelton right now.

When Rocker was brought in he was considered in coaching circles an average coach with a poor work ethic that didn't care for recruiting much. Chizik hired him but told him he had to do certain things to stay on. Rocker did those and actually the defensive line improved and did well. Also Rocker did everything perfectly and was rewarded with an NFL job.

Pelton came in regarded as a very good up and coming DL coach that was well respected dispite his lack of pedigree that others have. We had young guys and some of them were very raw, blackmon, but I had hoped for a bit more production from the group this year but honestly as young as they are there is only so much they can do, even Whitaker as large as he was coming in.

With the renewed focus on strength more so than conditioning we should see our guys gain a bit of ground this year. Also I would not be surprised if we see more of a shake up with the position coaches on the D side of the ball as time goes on.

I think the problems AU had this year are not tied to one issue but to a combination of several. Here is my opinion looking in from the outside.
#1 - lack of Jr/Sr leadership
#2 - recruiting - Chiz's 1st class did not have enough time before signing day to know what he did not have with O and D lines and build the relationships he needed to get them on campus. 2nd class was markedly better but they needed time to learn and grow.
#3 - Lack of experience in key positions - close games in their championship season did not allow enough room to develop the players they would need this year
#4 - total number of players this year did not give them numbers of quality players to compete in practice and get much better during the season.
#5 because of youth and lack of experience too much time each week had to be spent on correcting mistakes rather than on getting #1's AND #2's better.

it's not just youth, but being severly inexpierenced, When you had mostly seniors/juniors playing every down for the past two years, our freshmen and sophs have never even seen the field

A well thought out and proper response, this IMO is the main issue.

I have been saying this for half the season. Pelton does not give me warm fuzzies at all. When he said sacks are overrated I was like WHA???

I was reading something about how Tebow in the NFL was exposing the poor coaching and defensive play regarding the fundamentals of tackling for NFL defenders. He was saying that with the way that Denver was attacking defenses, they were forcing defenders to not just fill gaps, but actually take on blockers and do the dirty work.

Playing defense is difficult. Everyone wants to make the play, but you need guys on the line who take on blockers so that other players can step up and make the play. A lot of these guys come out of high school and are used to being dominant. They get to the SEC and they have to learn the position over again and get frustrated with just taking on blockers. Coaches need to know how to get the most out of them, too.

Our OLine got much better when Ben Wilkerson, our former All-American Center showed up to help coach the OLine. That reflects Rocker's influence for Auburn last year.

its not that they aren't being coached, its that they just haven't seen it until now. Pelton is a good DL coach, but until it becomes real for the players, he can't do too much. Think about it, most of these guys are use to just overpowering OL in HS and for most of them, they haven't had to deal much with proper alignment and proper technique. I can be coached all day long that i need a certain technique to succeed, but if I have never had to use that technique to succeed before, its hard to truly believe.

I know that it is the coaches job to prove it, but he can only do so much. I have seen decent improvement from them, so I am not giving up on Pelton yet.

I wonder about Alabama in this. If you look at their 2-deep, they are all seniors and juniors (if I remember correctly). I know that they have had a lot of blowouts and I am sure that they are getting a decent rotation, but it is interesting that they don't have more underclassmen in their 2-deep.

I wonder how that will affect them next year, when they lose A LOT of both seniors and juniors going pro.

I thought he was saying that with a response to the # of sacks we were getting, in that we needed to work on other things to allow the sacks to come. For example, Lemoniere was rushing WAY to far up field to try and get a sack, but leaving his run assignment completely and become a liability in run defense. Now, yes you would like to see a sack, but you have to do your assignment first. Thats what I though anyways.

Yeah Auburn is going down in the hierarchy, on the same level with Missy St. and ATM in West.

I hope so. We will see. I was disappointed with the lack of physical play on the DLine. It was inconsistent in my mind. Was it coaching? I don't know let's see what 2012 brings.

There is absolutely nothing that suggests this. AU is recruiting top talent the last 3 years. They will continue to be one of the big 3 in the West.

Auburn has a MUCH higher base than those 2 schools.

If you haven't been paying attention, Auburn has been an upper level program for 30 years now. They will have a 7-5 or 8-4 season from time to time, but they will be back to winning 10 games regularly.

Miss. St. is dancing in the streets if they win 8 games. Totally different situations.

I agree. Next season will be a big indicator on what type of coach Pelton is.

Just looking at the defenses (maybe somebody else can do offense), LSU is significantly older.

The top 20 in tackles for each team:

True Freshmen
LSU 1
AU 3

RS Freshmen
LSU 0
AU 2

True Sophomores
LSU 4
AU 9

RS Sophomores
LSU 7
AU 1

JR/SR
LSU 8
AU 5

In 2011, second year or younger players:
LSU = 5
AU = 14

This is pretty telling. It also means that AU should be significantly better next year. If not, then we should definitely revisit this topic.

He was. It is the same thing Rocker told Fairley, take care of the run the first two downs and the 3rd is when the sacks come. basically saying we need to force more 3rd and longs so that we can pin our ears back and go after the QB.
