He isn't even in the discussion, IMO, unless he dramatically improves

I just remember last year Fox sports was already calling him a lock for a 2nd round pick. I agree though, thats why I said wildcard lol.

I think Dye is referencing the overall talent at each position. The weakest area on Offense is WR, only because of experience. The weakest area on Defense is Safety, mainly due to depth. The first line players on both sides of the ball have the "potential" to be as good as any AU team the last 25 years. I think the 1988 Team was AUs most talented in modern era, but still lost a couple of games.

This. Couldn't get it done against LSU in Red Stick, and it cost them Dye's best shot at an NC.

I also think the 2006 team was more talented top to bottom than the 2004 squad, but Tubs screwed that one up.

While this is true, I can't think of many (if any?) recent championship contenders that didn't have multiple high draft picks

I'd put it this way, this AU team has a ton of NFL mid round talent, maybe better, across the board. Most positions are manned by upperclassmen as well

A lot of our "best" players don't play positions often taken RD1 (e.g OG - Braden Smith, K Daniel Carlson) or their style (RB Kam Pettway) size (LB D Davis) will limit their draft position.

I'm excited about this season, because I think we'll have a good team, but saying we're more talented than 04 is a stretch. That team was absolutely loaded. That's the best Auburn team I've seen in my nearly 50 years of watching football.

No way dude.

2004 and it wasn't close. 2003 is the one we screwed up.

Second time I've seen this sentiment, but again - I can't think of any contenders in recent memory who haven't had players drafted highly.

I think more accurately, NFL talent doesn't always equal on field success.

For sure - but contenders often have a player that goes boss for that one year and falls back to mediocrity, so draft can be skewed sometimes. Look at a lot of NFL first round 'busts' - many had just one great season and college but played for a NC
