I feel like we sorta stole one from y'all, but everyone is fascinated with Bentley and his connections to your stomping grounds. We've seen a lot of Auburn hats and shirts at our last three games around here. I'm not sure I can remember ever witnessing this kind of fascination for a kid. It's a good read, kind of long, but I'll excerpt it here ...

Jake Bentley’s success at South Carolina unsurprising and delightful to his hometown of Opelika

https://www.seccountry.com/south-carolina/jake-bentleys-success-comes-as-no-surprise-to-his-hometown-of-opelika

quote:

In a town defined by football and dominated by Auburn fandom, one TV at each house was devoted to the Tigers game against Ole Miss. The other locked in on South Carolina, as Bentley and the Gamecocks faced Tennessee in a primetime game.

“It’s been kinda unreal because he was down here a couple weeks ago,” Worth said. “Then you turn on ESPN and you see one of your best friends is playing. It’s like, ‘Wow, this is unbelievable.’ We were just proud of him.”

Shirley was tuned in and Cahela walked into her house and turned on the South Carolina game. Niffer’s at the Tracks tuned into see South Carolina, which Holmes said will be the norm from now on.

“This community now has a heart for South Carolina,” Cahela said.

Little more than 270 miles away, they all watched as Bentley did what they saw him do last year at Opelika. He stood tall, made some of his best passes under pressure, made some throws that were mirror images of what he did when he was playing for Opelika and he led the Gamecocks to a 24-21 upset win against the No. 18-ranked Vols.

“We were all sitting there going, ‘They finally realized what we’ve seen all these years,’” Speakman said.

Little more than an hour after the game ended, Worth’s phone vibrated. It was a one-word text from Bentley.

“Lit!!!”

He was only in the Auburn area for a couple of years. Not sure if we'd have been in the mix if his Dad stayed at Auburn.
But from what I've seen, he looks like a good one

Great QB..really wanted him at Auburn. When his dad went to coach at South Carolina it was kind of a given he was going there.

not really, he followed diddy.

The only reason he had a short time in the state of Alabama was because Dad was hired. I am surprised there wasnt a stronger USC presence in his recruiting even when his dad was the coach at AU.

All that aside, he looks like he is a keeper. next Garcia, minus the issues

*after Muschamp left and took Bentley's dad with him.

Even had his dad still been here it would've been a hard battle with USCe. We only would have had a chance if his dad was still here AND he stayed in HS for his senior year IMO

Garcia never had the arm this kid has ... or the football IQ.

Connor Shaw had the football IQ, but not the arm. Of course Bentley is not the scrambler Shaw was, but he's a better scrambler and runner than a lot of us probably gave him credit for before now.

Bentley honestly reminds me more of Steve Taneyhill, but with a better arm. They move a lot alike in the pocket and both were/are accurate. Bentley is bigger, and with a better arm.

Shaw, Taneyhill, Bentley ... all three coaches' sons.

Taneyhill was a wild man ... but he stayed out of trouble, he was a winner and a player. Very competitive. Really good vision, could glide in the pocket. Decent leader.

Shaw was/is just a big hearted kid, not a great arm but accurate and extremely competitive and fearless. Great leader.

Garcia had a cannon for an arm but was not that accurate, he would have games where he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. He played with a lot of emotion and he was competitive but he was spoiled rotten, came from a privileged home, the youngest of three brothers ... and he was just a pain in the arse off the field. Poor leader.

Bentley might end-up being the best combination of all of them.

Dang, I know most of the people in that article.

No one really expected him to wind up here, just with his style versus what Gus had been going for. It was Stanford/Georgia before they moved

His Dad and Gus are old friends. His dad was a legend in South Carolina HS coaching and knows how to train QBs. He was only in Alabama for two years. Very smart kid who was recruited by Stanford, etc. Hope he and USC do well. Would have loved to see him in Orange and Blue The King is back

After Papa Bentley went with Boom, nobody at Auburn expected to get Bentley.

I think he's a heckuva young QB and would have been an even worse fit in Gus's offense than Sean White.

Oh yeah, I've known Bobby for a long time. I remember when he was a young man, an assistant, at Byrnes. I remember when three of his boys were born.

He had that little hiccup at PC, a job he never should have taken ... and he approached that wrong in a lot of ways, but he's learned from that and it's well in the past now.

Bobby is very underrated as an offensive mind. He's every bit the student of the game on the offensive side of the ball that Muschamp is on the defensive side of the ball. If Roper were to do well enough here to get an HC gig somewhere, and I think he might given time, then I have no doubt that Bobby will be promoted to OC.

Is his hometown really Opelika?

Wasn't he only here for a couple years while his Dad was here? I thought he was originally from South Carolina and spent most of his childhood there

That's right ... which makes this story all the more interesting.

He's a South Carolinian by birth, and probably grew up a Clemson fan as was alluded-to in the article when they mentioned he always chose Clemson when playing NCAA Football video games. Bobby was, at one time, really disliked by Gamecock fans because he sent a ton of his players to Clemson.

But they ended up in Opelika, we thought for sure Jake would be an Auburn QB because they/you offered him as soon as Bobby got there ... yet football has a strange way of working-out sometimes.

Gamecock fans were upset with Spurrier for not going-after Muschamp as his DC last year ... Spurrier was far too loyal to Whammy Ward (a Bama alumni and former player) and Muschamp ended-up at Auburn.

Retrospectively, it's all worked-out well for the Gamecocks. Muchamp probably would not have been given the job were he the DC here last year. Muschamp and Bobby certainly would not have had a chance to get to know one another ... and Jake would probably still be playing HS ball in Opelika with the probability of eventually signing at Auburn this February.

I never heard his name in serious contention as a recruit for AU, but perhaps I wasnt paying attention. He's a good looking QB, that's for sure. Good get for the Cocks. If Champ can recruit some more OL and receivers to give him targets, he could be the best QB y'all have had in a long time.

He must have liked Opelika better because even after his dad took the job at South Carolina he was going to stay and finish HS at Opelika before he graduated early.

Do y'all really believe Muschamp would've gone to USCe over Auburn?

AU wasn't listed as on of his top 4 before his Dad left.

Who knows. Spurrier and Muschamp had become very good friends. After 2014 we had to have a DC that could coach ... we were a good DC away from winning ten games in 2014.

Word around here was that Spurrier was worried about staff chemistry in the end - which pissed a lot of Gamecock fans off because we wanted him to really go after Muschamp - but he chose not to - we would have paid him well, that was never an issue.

Is it true that Muschamp wanted the "coach in waiting" title at SC? I dunno, that's been the rumor from some pretty good sources.

Spurrier always contended that he never seriously discussed the possibility with Muschamp. He claimed he was happy with Whammy ... which led to his sudden downfall in the opinion of many.

Supposedly Gus was on the hot seat is why. I've heard Bobby wasn't sure they would be there for long at the time. It's no biggie ... it all appears to have worked-out for the best but you have to ask yourself the question, if he really was not considering Auburn when he was so highly rated and his Dad was coaching there ... has no one ever asked, why?

ETA:

Yes, Auburn was on his list. LINK

His Top 5 were Stanford, SCAR, Bama, Clemson, Auburn but Clemson showed little interest because they only recruit dual-threat QBs.
