A part of me misses the days of waiting on the polls after a wild New Years Day.

OP forgot

Conferences stayed together
7-6 games leaving you on the edge of your seat
players played both offense and defense
you had no idea Ole Piss lost until you went to the movies and saw it on the sports reel.

a-hole that was during the 70-early90s. I kind of like some of that from the OP. There was a time when college football did not dominate an entire Saturday. That's why I limit myself to the Alabama game period.

I do miss the SWC and the Big 4 New Year's Day bowls (most set to times so you can actually watch them).

Other than that, I just miss schedules like this:

9/2 vs. Nebraska (9-3)
9/16 @ Missouri (8-4)
9/23 vs. Southern California (12-1)
9/30 vs. *Vanderbilt (2-9)
10/7 @ Washington (7-4)
10/14 vs. *Florida (4-7)
10/21 @ *Tennessee (5-5-1)
10/28 vs. Virginia Tech (4-7)
11/4 vs. *Mississippi State (6-5)
11/11 vs. *Louisiana State (8-4)
12/2 vs. *Auburn (6-4-1)
1/1 vs. Penn State (11-1) Sugar Bowl

College football was soooo much better back in the 70's and 80's. Teams had no problem playing the top teams back then. They had a lot less bowls and it meant something to win 9 games. Nowadays a team can equal by winning 6 games and get into a bowl nobody watches. Michigan vs. Ohio st. Followed by usc/ucla was always an awesome Saturday growing up. The winner went to the rose bowl. The loser went home.

I miss being able to watch the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta Bowls without having to have cable so everyone can watch them.

The vast majority of the the things you listed really sucked and that's why they went away.

It beats the alternative. There is only one way not to turn 22.

-Rose Bowl on NBC. During the broadcast, they were promoting the Orange Bowl that would follow between Nebraska and Oklahoma

-Curt Gowdy (one of my favorite announcers) was doing the play-by-by with John Brodie and OJ Simpson providing the commentary.

quote:

No sideline reporter (A good thing)

-Analog television signal (How did we live without HD )

-No names on the back of the jerseys

-No constant time and score on the screen

-No first down line

-No instant replay review (Charles White was stripped of the ball near the goal line by a Michigan defender and still awarded a touchdown. If they had a replay review, it would have probably been reversed)

quote:

No ticker with scores from other games

-Traditional uniforms

-John Robinson and Bo Schembechler the head coaches

-No going back to the studio for a game break

-No sponsor associated with the bowl name

Very interesting to see how the game broadcast has evolved. I was a kid in the 70's and remember first watching football on my parents 13" black and white set.

The younger crowd on this board cant begin to fathom what college football or life in general was like in the late 1950s to 1975.

No internet/cable/cell phones....how did we ever survive? Quite well and the rotary phones made you actually have to look before calling.... Party lines where your neighbors shared YOUR phone with you.

You were lucky to be on TV ONCE a year during regular season and that was reserved for the powerhouses back then, no SWAC games....no football on Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fridays that were televised. No ESPN.

Southern football was a gentlemans game and you didnt try to run up scores...no need to back in the 1960s. No BCS & no CFP. There was usually only 1 game a week televised until UGA/Oklahoma sued the NCAA in the early 1980s.

Yes...teams aspired to be invited to a major bowl game, like the Rose, Cotton, Sugar and Orange...NCs were crowned by the media. Teams didnt fire coaches mid season and uproot coaching families. Fans were loyal and no matter what they supported their teams.

Although I did pay attention to recruiting...99% of folks didnt.

Sunday coaches shows in black n white...hell....the girls school had a coaches show that was unwatchable with so much snow.

Coaches drinking? Hell watch some of the Sunday shows of Johnny Majors with a real hangover...Vince Dooley of UGA and Ray Graves of UF were straight as an arrow.

I dont miss turf....that cause a lot of injuries and was mainly the result of teams with fast running backs in a wishbone offense.

Saw a payphone the other day on a busy highway....first one I have seen in ages....walked by it and vandals has destroyed it.

Oh...yeah...do something wrong in middle/high school and the principal or Dean would have a large paddle in their office to mete out punishment and it hurt.

I miss when it was purely 100% about football and wasn't a social event to show off your new threads.
