Also, if the cumulative effects of playing long stretches of time while facing the HUNH are so deadly, wouldn't the length of the season be a problem? Perhaps they should be lobbying to return to an 8-10 game season.
Exactly, the rule they are trying to implement will provide no real safety value they pretend that it will. The player BB used as an example died in off season conditioning where no restrictions exist to stop conditioning. If a player is truly that high risk why wouldn't they be monitored more closely?
Why don't they have staff employed to keep a health check on the players who are at risk?

Oh and I forgot since you like these so much...

I'm against the rule, but I am amused at how often it gets brought up here.
Do you not think bama fans would go pretty crazy if they tried to institute some sort of rule that a school can only sign a certain number of 4/5* recruits every year under some ridiculous guise of safety?

What do Mike Dubose and Gus have in common?
They both won SEC championships.
They both won SEC championships.

This entire thread is totally screwed. I think Saban is just doing what is best for the program. People need to get off of his case. My $0.02:
1) Saban lost two straight to LSU a few years ago and has since then built his defense around the concept of beating LSU. This seems to have made sense at the time, as LSU was roughly the #2 team in the division/conference/nation at the time (behind Bama)...
2) This has worked out well so far as LSU is concerned on Bama's schedule. However, in the mean time, A&M and Auburn (two HUNH schools) have beaten Bama.
3) Likewise, while LSU has lost to Bama, the Tigers have beaten those very same A&M and Auburn teams during the years that those HUNH teams beat Bama.
4) Conclusion: beating LSU and beating HUNH teams require two completely different defensive schemes, and it has been proven that both schemes can't be implemented at the same time. Either your defense can do one or the other, but not both. Saban's choice is either to beat LSU and lose to the top two or three HUNH teams or to beat those HUNH teams and then lose to LSU. Restricting HUNH teams is the best solution to this dilemma at the moment--since Saban already has LSU under his thumb. This way, Saban can take care of LSU and not have to worry about the Tigers slipping in the back door of the BCS/playoffs past Bama when the Tigers knock off A&M and Auburn.
Saban has every right to support whatever rules are best for his own program.

The thing is, he should do the "coach" thing and meet the challenge by coaching. Obviously there are teams that have consistently stopped the HUNH, the blueprint is out there. Instead he's trying to legislate his way past the HUNH all together.
Saban's obviously a control freak. Playing against the HUNH he probably feels like he has no control. Must be infuriating for him. He's winning now because he has the superior talent edge, but he knows that the longer Gus and Sumlin are in the SEC, the narrower that gap in talent will become.

I'm not embarrassed. Why would I let a football team "embarrass" me? That's ridiculous in it's own right. You need to check your priorities.

You would love for Alabama fans to be irate. I get it. You want some notion of a kink in the armor. Regardless, until he actually answers direct questions on the matter, all of this is speculation.
The chink in "your" armor would be losing to "your" rival, and then losing "your" bowl game.
Put that in your dumb gump pipe and smoke it.

Yeah it's not fair you guys had two miracles in a row and ended up getting beat in the game that mattered the most.

This could go on the Bama board, but I'll post it here to gather opinions of others.
How can other Alabama fans defend this? We have a coach making $7 million a year and he can't figure out how to stop his biggest rival? He can't change his style or adapt?
I understand safety, I get it, but even as an Alabama fan I have to say it's a bullshite out and excuse to try and slow down that which you can't stop on your own.
ETA: certainly I'm not the only Alabama fan to feel this way.
