The word around town is that he is the nephew of J&M bookstore owner. Was traveling at over 80 miles an hour when struck car. WAs probably high and may have told the truth that he fell asleep or possibly passed out. Marijuana makes a lot of people real sleepy. Either way not good for the young man and will cause a stain for the people at J&M. Stupidity has a wide swath with the people it can hurt.

he will probably get youthful offender status so if he does any time its capped at 3 years and his records are sealed.

Authorities have determined from car data and other evidence that the 16-year-old driver who on May 25 smashed into “Voice of the Auburn Tigers” sports radio broadcaster Rod Bramblett and his wife Paula, killing both, was traveling 89-91 mph at the time of the crash.

Police obtained a search warrant for both vehicles. That allowed access to their Electronic Data Recording Modules following the crash. The data was extracted from both vehicles and was analyzed by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the affidavit says.

Yeah, because nothing says justice like arbitrarily picking who is and isn’t a child based on our vengeful quest for a pound of flesh.

Vengeful has nothing to do with it. I don't want drunk or high people driving cars, no matter their age.
If he was in fact high.........frick him.

If the 16 year old’s name is being reported correctly (Johnston Edward Taylor), then he’s not the nephew of Trey Johnston

Just the fact that he was driving 90 MPH on a busy road with frequent stops makes me have no sympathy for him, high or not.

Yeah. The direction he was traveling, there were traffic lights just 1.5 miles up the road. The road has a significant turn just prior to that light. So he was awake going through that intersection 1.5 miles prior to the crash.

They should hold his parents accountable. A 16 year old smoking pot and parents unaware is inexcusable

Seems like a bit of a flimsy case. There are no tests(that I know of) that can prove marijuana impairment at the time of the crash, and it can stay in your system for weeks. And excessive speeding leads to a lot of traffic deaths where charges aren't filed.

90 mph in a 55, no sign of braking, and the mere presence of THC make it as close to a slam dunk case as one can get. He will plead to something that gets him out before he's a too old to still have a life because he will have no hope at trial.

I'm over 50 and I'm not happy because to innocents are dead. As far as how I feel about the kid, if it were up to me he would never breathe free air again.

Some 'mistakes' don't deserve a do-over. This is one of them.

He killed 2 people who were also prominent members of the community. I seriously doubt he gets YO status.

Trey has 2 brothers. Any nephew from that side of the family would have the surname Johnston. Trey’s wife’s family lives in Georgia for the most part, and none of her siblings have the surname Taylor. So no, I don’t know his entire family, but I can piece enough together to surmise this teenager isn’t Trey’s nephew.

FWIW, this guy was known as Jet Taylor. With one of his names being Johnston, I guess that’s how everyone started drawing the connection to J&M

What sends a stronger message to kids: knowing that a kid is in prison because he drove high and killed 2 people, or seeing that kid doing community service for a few weekends, and knowing in the back of your mind that there won’t be any real consequences for anything you do while you’re a “kid?”

This kid wasn’t scared of prison. It wasn’t on his radar, nor the radar of any other kid. Putting this kid in prison solves nothing. His life, as he knew it, is over. The only way to help the family of the victims is to have him work his arse off for years to pay some restitution and speak against DUI. If he’s sent to prison he’ll be on taxpayer dime and sitting around learning how to be a criminal, so he can return to prison one day and we can support him again. Prison should be a place to keep repeat, violent offenders.

Lots of excuses for this level of stupidity. When I was 16, I knew that driving 90 MPH could kill someone. If he's old enough to drive, then he's old enough to pay a price if he does something stupid. Do I think he should go to prison for the rest of his life? No. DO I think that he needs to do some time and lose his license for a very long time? Absolutely. Prison time, along with restitution would deter others from being stupid. Personal responsibility no longer exists; it's always someone else's fault. He made a wrong choice, now he gets to pay the price. I'm sure if he killed your loved one, you would be singing a different tune.

You act like I'm promoting letting the kid off free. I said that he needs to pay restitution and go speak to young kids about the dangers of DUI. Which do you think would be better for society? What good is he in prison? He'd just be sitting around costing us money in prison, and learning from some very bad people. Out of prison he could help pay for his crime.

How much restitution? How much are the lives of the two people he needlessly killed worth?

I wonder if that had anything to do with his propensity to drive 35 mph over the speed limit through intersections?
