No originally it came from Marquette and Joliet's Journal of 1673 where they used the name Akansea from the Quapaw Indian Tribe.
A few years later, Lasalle spelled it as Acansa on his map.
And in 1722, was listed as Arkansas on La Harpe's map.
Arkansas is the French pronunciation of an indian word. And was originally pronounced as Ar-Kan-Saw.
