So, it's a plural of saw, which is incorrect.
Or, a plural of Kansas, as in Ar-KAN-zus-zus, which is incorrect.
Purdue is incorrect because their conclusions are based on a pronunciation that is incorrect. Jesus Christ, in 1881 an entire state of people agreed to mispronounce a word. Should we accept mispronunciation in our society?
Do we accept Ebonics as a true language? I hope not...

pronunciation is incorrect. Originally, the word Arkansas was pronounced Ar-KAN-sas
Sorry Killz, but that's complete horseshite. The pronunciation has always ended in a 'W' sound. Arkansas was a state long before Kansas.

It's a plural of neither. That's why it's "'s" It's possessive.
If there were such a thing as multiple Arkansas, and they all possessed something, only then would Arkansas' be grammatically correct

As someone with a name that ends in 's', I think I can shed some light on the dilemma... its Arkansas'

Read my statement about the state of Arkansas formally embracing the mispronunciation of the word in 1881. The state should be pronounced Ar-KAN-sas, not Ar-kan-saw.
However, clearly American society cares little about correct grammar, so I'll play along and start using Arkansas's instead of Arkansas'.

Actually, I find your comment both grammatically atrocious and amusing because it makes no sense.
I love you, Dale! You never fail to make me laugh!

Whether it looks awkward, or whether or not a majority of people use Arkansas', is irrelevant. Arkansas's is the grammatically correct version of the possessive form of Arkansas.
Good enough for me
Killz - if you disagree, take it up with Purdue

It would still be Arkansas's even if the "s" were to be pronounced. It's a singular word, regardless of how it's pronounced.

Actually, the most surprising thing in this thread is that the majority of Arkansas posters use a very yankee university's conclusion to support their claim.

Arkansas.....name of Indian tribe that pronounced it's own name as Arkansaw. If you're too dumb to realize that, please do the world a favor and drink some raid. The spelling and pronunciation come directly from the tribe. As for the 's/s' question. They actually are both grammatically correct. Oxford school in England dictates that either are useful. I'd say they know their English.

If I recall correctly, "Arkansas" comes from a Quapaw word meaning downstream people. And it was always pronounced Ar-kan-saw.
