But Stevens is next level in-game.
Stevens is like, Top 3 in the NBA in-game adjustment, play calling out of timeouts, etc. He'd do nasty things at Kentucky.
However, he also wouldn't sign as many players as Calipari does. He'd keep signing great players, but what Calipari does is on a level that nobody has ever done before - especially not every single year.

no doubt. I thought he would crash and burn in the NBA. I feel dumb.

I thought he would be like Hoiberg has. Get run over by players, seem small, not be able to deal with NBA guys.
He's been the opposite. It's pretty incredible.

John Wooden is regarded as one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time yet he bought and paid for all of those UCLA teams. What's the difference?

Are you really suggesting he can't coach? And here I thought you were a decent SEC basketball poster on this board.
Sorry I guess I am a shitty poster because I don't think he can coach worth a shite in game. 75% of these jokers are atrocious if you watch them during the game.

Honestly I don't even judge coaches on in-game adjustments anymore. So few of them do it well, especially in college, and half the time I think they know they can't expect their players to implement it so it won't be worth it anyway.

What else is there other than recruiting and motivating?

Player development and teaching guys how to play the game, how to run your stuff, how to play with toughness and how to play as a unit is pretty important stuff.
For having a brand new team every year I think Calipari is very, very good at those things. His teams almost never play pick up ball and they always play hard, and generally play good defense (this year has been a struggle).

Is he the best in the game as an in game coach? Nope. But coaching doesn't begin and end with your in game adjustments. And he's not nearly as bad as portrayed. He's adjusted philosophies with teams on mulitple occasions.

OK OK he is the greatest ever, geeze.
Seriously though triple, I don't see how you can even judge him in the player development phase when he has so much better talent than everyone else.
And Belle, he may not be as bad as I think during the game. I definitely don't watch every UK game, so my opinion is from a small sample.

Yea - I don't really judge Cal on player development too much for the reason you noted. I do judge him on the way he is able to put together a team every year that plays as a unit and gets after it. That's clearly a skill, as not everybody is able to do that with elite players.

How do you know he is worth a shite at it until someone else has a team like this? Look at the fab 5. How hard is it for a team to loo well coached when they are better than everyone else?
It could be tremendously easy and Cal is making it tough by being a constant whiner? Who knows, maybe the whining is the only way it will work and he is the GOAT? Hard to tell when he has all the burger boys.

If you ever question Cal on player development. He got THIS into the NBA.

He has the best players money can buy and doesn't have that much to show for it. atleast Saban wins a lot of championships .

Are you suggesting he would have coached them to the finals without cheating?
