Alabama vs Notre Dame spinoff thread : Who are "the six" nationally?

#1 Alabama covers the south > Tennessee > Auburn
#2 Notre Dame covers the east coast > Penn State > Pittsburgh
#3 Oklahoma covers the southwest > Nebraska > Texas
#4 Ohio State (after WWII) + Michigan (before WWII) covers the midwest
#5 Southern California covers the west coast > Washington > UCLA
#6 ???? one of the lesser teams above or some post war success story?
Michigan may have the most wins but they have played the longest AND most of those wins were imbalanced games with teams that had to travel to Ann Arbor far more than Michigan went on the road for a return trip before many on tRant were even born
Yale has the third most wins but became non competitive on the national stage by World War II
Oklahoma has MNC's from the post war to the present. Nebraska and Texas dominate a stretch but do not overlap (TX = 60's then NE from 70's to 90's then TX since 2000's) while Sooners have been constant in same period.
Penn State was basically 1 top coach and Pittsburgh was great early but faded just as ESPN was taking off
Georgia Tech is most impressive in winning 4 MNC's with 4 different coaches in 4 different eras in 2 different conferences but probably not enough to mke the cut for #6. Still they have more MNC's than Michigan since the 1950's.
Of the new kids on the block, LSU / UF / FSU / "U" all can make arguments but not sure any can claim #6 spot as Alabama is still THE football school for the south.

Why not Florida at #6?

The 8 blue bloods in cfb are Alabama, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, and USC.

If you had to pick 1 of the 2, would you pick Ohio State or Michigan?
(can only pick 1 B1G team)
If you had to pick 1 of the 3, would you pick Oklahoma or Nebraska or Texas?
(can only pick 1 Big 12 team)
It seems like Michigan gets a pass because they are old and big but have not really been a player on the BCS stage at all. Ohio State has owned them for decades. Notre Dame was living on fumes since Lou but at least they were in a BCS game with Bama recently
Texas has 3 MNC's with DKR and 1 with Brown, were they great, or just lucky to play in the SWC with the Hogs as their only real threat and a bunch of teams in Texas they could beat upon.

#6 Sewanee
quote:
Sewanee was one of the first college football powers of the South and the 1899 team in particular was very strong. The 1899 Tigers went 12–0, outscoring opponents 322 to 10, and won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) title.

Notre Dame may be physically in Indiana but their fans and media love have mostly come from the east. Not surprising they are in the ACC and not in the B1G.

Notre Dame has a national fan base. Much like the Cowboys, Steelers and Yankees.

Michigan owned OSU in the 90's and they beat them 5-4-1 in the 10 year war.

Have you ever been in NY, NJ or eastern PA? Or pretty much anywhere there are Catholics and no dominant football team?

Florida? Blueblood? No. Just no.
They've been good since 90 and great at times but until 90 they battled vandy many times for the SEC cellar.

Ohio state has the advantage over the last 100 years. Michigan is living on the leather helmet years
