He always looks like something to those that don't agree with him. He may know more about the situation than any of us.
I think he played it right. It was gonna be a media storm no matter what, because of the time of year and who the coach is.
Kid was held up what, 4 days?

I actually have no problem with the way Saban handled it. He was perfectly in his rights to deny a transfer.

4 Days? I don't think so. Seems like they have been lobbying for the release since last November? (I think that was the time frame an Alabama fan said...correct me if I am wrong.) It would have been valuable to have had him as soon as possible, but, as I said....Saban did absolutely nothing wrong.

This was about a possible impending lawsuit and the SEC losing that lawsuit. It was/is the smart play imo.

Could be. It's hard to say definitively. I agree with WG (I think it was him) when he said the Smith's were causing a fuss in the Houston area with press reports and Alabama was concerned about hurting their recruiting there.

I'm amazed at all the Bama fans that are so upset with this. Your deep in talent. It won't hurt you. You have a plug and play situation in Tuscaloosa right now.

Understanding I'm older than most in this board so my perspective is different but it's upsetting for two reasons. There are guys more physically talented than Smith but he understood the defense and was added experience and he plays all the time. This is not a guy who was buried on a depth chart with no time like Chris Black. This is the part that bothers me most. When did an individual's wants become more important than what was best for the team. This is about him following a coach, not about him being mistreated or treated unfairly.
The other part that bothers me is he asked for a transfer after he took the lions share of the reps in spring ball when a different player could have been found to play the position. So now instead of our two best players manning corner Fitzpatrick has to take his position. He hurt the team by waiting to ask for a transfer in June. Kirby left in January.

Probably a role very similar to what he had at Alabama.
So basically he left a Title Contending team just to go to a team thats rebuilding, just to do the same shite and get the same playing time. Now I'm definitely glad he left because clearly it wasn't about draft stock or his education but mainly wanting to play his final season with Kirby. Theres nothing wrong with that but it comes of disingenuous when your mom try to have it seem that the only reason their going through all this is because they want to secure a better future for Maurice.

I'm not defending his choice, nor can I say this is exactly what will happen. Why don't we wait and see before we rush to judgement on the kid?

Not really. from the link one of your guys provided...his mother instigated it by sending Saban an e-mail. The kid did not know she had sent it. Saban called the kid into his office and jumped on him without asking about it. The kid (Justifiably) took offense to Saban jumping on him without asking about it and decided he was finished.

Now...make not....

This is the kids version. Who knows if it went down like that or not. Nobody knows.

Yes and no. Again from the link....this has been brewing since last November, so this was not something Alabama didn't know was going on. Now...they might have thought it was taken care of, but I would think it should have at least been in the back of their minds.

I agree but I just believe its real messed up how far the family went to get Smiths transfer, to the point of (whether intentionally or unintentionally) slandering the program and leaking private conversations with the coach who helped train him just to get media pressure against him during a time when his former teammates are training and getting prepared for the season, just to have your way and play that season. It worked for the kid and more power to him, but in the end you could have sat a year and still played for your coach all the while not posing a distraction for your old teammates during a important time of the year.

I'm sorry but I have zero qualms with the way Saban handled this if this is in fact how it went down. The mother had zero business sending Saban an email without first consulting the son/player. If he (son/player) didn't know about the email, it's his mother's fault.

If was in the back of their minds in November then it was quickly pushed way back in the ole cranium because our coaches (Kirby Smart included) we busy as hell preparing for an SEC Championship and Playoff games on the way to another National Championship.
