Aggies bigger winner with LHN

quote:

All Texas could do was eventually admit defeat and follow the money and the Aggies to the SEC, the only conference that would take them because ESPN could do the one thing that other conferences couldn't...terminate the LHN on terms that were agreeable to all parties.

Thanks DeLoss

Of course. Completely boxed in and recognized it. They pulled the rip cord.

Glad we pulled it when we did. Ironic that LHN played a role in our leaving but at the same time ended up keeping them tethered a bit longer to the B12.

Even more ironic that B12 might emerge from this even stronger through acquisition that Texass was blocking.

I’m not knocking Texass. Everyone ended up doing what’s best for their own program.

It was indeed a bold move and every other school would've taken the same deal.

But no, Deloss. Being free of that albatross might be the best thing about the SEC move.

I wouldn't say Aggies are the "bigger winner" as Texas enters the SEC with the same number of SEC CG appearances. TAMU totally squandered a decade-long headstart.

Aggies embarrassing themselves with crazy affirmations is nothing new. Still, this is strange.

The LHN was a massive success for the University of Texas. Most people don't realize that all of its massive revenue didn't go just to athletics. We are into the double digits of endowed professorships created with LHN money. The academic mission of the university was enhanced greatly by LHN.

It is also surprising how many strange tales get told about why Texas & OU joined the SEC when they did. It wasn't out of any esoteric purpose aligned with following A&M.

The honest among you will acknowledge this is true - Texas could have joined the B1G or the SEC any time it wanted to. I would have preferred the B1G. Texas didn't want itself or any school in the state of Texas to join the SEC. Why? It didn't want SEC-level cheating in the state of Texas? What changed?

Alston vs NCAA in SCOTUS. By a unanimous verdict, the Supreme Court allowed for players to be compensated. There was no more cheating. The SCOTUS decision came out on 6/21/21. The news that Texas & OU would join the SEC leaked on 7/21/21. This wasn't a coincidence.

Massive success? Sounds about right…

Deloss really played his hand masterfully for the football program that was once the belle of the ball:

LHN disaster
Conference Re-alignment disaster
Four 5-7 seasons since 2009
Horrific Big-12 football home schedule
Ultimately following A&M to the SEC

I absolutely love this type of coping…

Pay no attention to all of the other factors, and tell yourself this is what it was all about. It will keep you in the correct mindset going forward….

Aggy should be thanking Texas that it didn’t make booting A&M out of the SEC a stipulation for joining.

I wouldn't say squandered. But I think Texas will better capitalize on the switch from a purely results perspective.

That’s hilarious. The old SWC, including Texas, set the standard for cheating back in the day.

Not including Texas. The attitude was that TAMU, SMU, Baylor, etc. could not stand with the 800 pound gorilla in the SWC. And that was correct: no kid with an offer from the flagship was going to go play for those programs. So all things being equal, Texas didn't need to cheat. The TAMUs and SMUs had to cheat if they wanted to compete, and I don't blame them.

Contrast that with the SEC, which had 8 or 9 flagships. No one university stood out above the rest, and thus they all had to cheat, or be left behind. That's also why Fulmer gets such a bad rap for ratting: he broke the SEC gentleman's agreement "if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'."

Aggy logic on full display.

I thought it was the "100 Year Decision" by Loftin & crew? Now it's Big Bad Daddy Texas & the LHN?

"That prompted a phone call to then-commissioner Mike Slive in 2009 -- he got his number by asking his AD Bill Byrne to ask his son Greg for it -- and gauged whether the SEC would have interest in adding Texas A&M.

-Former Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin"

"In the book, “The 100-year decision: Texas A&M and the SEC,” Loftin admits that “the network really was not the final straw.”

ESPN had the Big Ten contract through 2022 and Texas could join other conferences by splitting their T3 revenue with conference mates.

No team made more money from shared revenue in 2011-2022 than the Texas with their combined T3 media rights and B12 shared earnings.

But hey, that aggy math yo!
