My theory is that the older generation of Auburn fans (ones who grew up watching Bryant/Shug) were always ticked off over Bama saying they'd never play at Auburn, so when Bama finally rolled up in their busses in 1989, that older Auburn generation did not welcome them with open arms. Wish there was a book written specifically about that game, cause I have only seen snippets of info on that day's overall fan environment.

I had to pause and just now watching the rest. I won't lie, this is damn good football on both sides. The home and home switch is one of the best things to happen to this series.

ETA: my god, goalposts used to be short as hell

You are correct. We have a reputation as being an extremely gracious fanbase to all visitors, but not on Dec 2, 1989.

Decades of resentment and anger had built up at that point. We had the best football program in the SEC, the second largest stadium, we were back to back defending SEC champions going for our 4th SEC title in 6 years, a perianal top 10 team, and yet we still couldn't even play our home game against bama at home. We were one pissed off fanbase with years, of anger built up revolving around the 1989 game.

A lot of bama fans were concerned about going to AU that day. Curry called in the FBI for an escort for himself into the stadium (uncalled for). AU fans did rock the bama buses hard as they tried to get into the stadium. AU fans were hostile to bama fans that day. Fortunately, the ticket was so expensive and the hardest ticket to get for any IB ever. Those things were family treasures and like gold bullion. So, the bama fans that were there were the better ones and problems were few and far between.

I do remember my mom telling me to leave my granddad alone and be careful with him before the game. I remember being scared of him that day as well. I seriously remember that. The intensity of the older generations (my dad and granddad) that day were simply on a different level than any other game ever.
